For 2005 we had a list of 21 names for storms:
Arlene
Bret
Cindy
Dennis
Emily
Franklin
Gert
Harvey
Irene
Jose
Katrina
Lee
Maria
Nate
Ophelia
Philippe
Rita
Stan
Tammy
Vince
Wilma,

With weeks left in the hurricane season, it looks like the names are running out.
Is there a rule for making new names for additional storms???
Will the next one be storm X???

They go Greek. Alpha, Beta, and so on.

They start using the Greek alphabet, so they'll be Alpha, Beta, etc...

They were saying on the weather channel that they will start using Alpha, Beta, etc. for any additional names they need. Let's hope they don't need them but it is sure looking likely that it will since there is still awhile left to the hurricane season........

dang djohnsto77 you type quick -- you beat me to it.

You guys are fast.
I don't think Google could have returned an answer faster, and they work in fractions of a second.
Thanks for the info.

Has there ever been a need to go to the Greek alphabet for storm names???

Not yet, although one year (back in the 30's? can't remember...) they ran out of names on the last storm of the season.

As mentioned, nope. Close, but no cigar...

Looks like this year may be the trick...only 4 more to go...

I want Hurricane Omega! That would be so cool to hear on the news.

"Hurricane Omega slams into the Gulf COast destroying the city of NO again. One would think they would have stopped building it below sea level after Hurricane Alpha, Gamma, Sirius, Latta, and Katrina."

On the Weather Channel they were saying that we've never ever used the Greek letters--if we do, it'll be the first time in history.

After we use those up, maybe we can do Russian letters. Bring on the Cyrillic!

If they were to go to Greek letters and then a disastrous hurricane hit somewhere, would they retire Hurricane Alpha? From then on forced to start on Beta in another busy hurricane season?

Hurricane Stan, Yeah I can see it now. That'll be a snoozer.

I think if you want people to take Hurricanes seriously, you're gonna have to start giving them sinister names. I mean, why do you all think no one really took Katrina seriously? Because the last time we heard about a Katrina, she was walking on sunshine.

We need to relate bad things with notorioulsy bad people and or characters.

Hurricane Allistare
Hurricane Jason
Hurricane Bundy
Hurricane Ozzie
Hurricane Leona
Hurricane Koresh
Hurricane Reno
Hurricane Rove

Its the only way modern society can and will put a negative connotation on these events and finally see them as the serious threat they are.

Why aren't Q, X,Y and Z used? I can think of a few names that start with those letters. I was going to ask why can't we just start over the with A, but I was thinking that they may get confusing.

...After hurricane Wilma that we, of course, have Hurricanes Fred, Betty, and Barney?

They would likely be followed by what would be viewed, by then, as a "Surper-Storm" which would of course be named......

"Bam-Bam"

By then there wouldn't be much left, so "Pebbles" might be appropriate; unless the final tropical storm is a particulary wet and sloppy one, in which case I suggest, "Dino"!

I watched CNN this morning and they are watching an area of disturbance that if it developes will be hurricane Alpha the first time they have had to go to the greek names.

I was also just thinking thank God(literally), for winter or hurricanes would be year round.

i really resent that comment. it was rude and disrespectful to the people of New Orleans. I will refrain myself from saying anything more.
