I think Japan and China's relationship will define the start of the 21st century. Because these nations have a vested interest in control of the pacific. I believe there are just too many flash points for them to stay peaceful.

Taiwan and the straits of Malacca are both very important shipping lanes for east Asia. The Koreas could flare up at any point, which would cause Japan to go nuclear. Then there are the Senkaku/diaoyu islands and their natural gas fields.

And because of the building friction between the two they will begin a larger military buildup which will just perpetuate the cycle. It will build to a head and the rest will be history…( there are enough Chinese conflict posts)
