Hugo Chavez wants to move the UN headquarters from New York to Jerusalem citing the US's failed war in Iraq as disrespect for the UN.

www.washingtonpost.com
UNITED NATIONS -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez denounced the U.S.-led war in Iraq on Thursday and told world leaders they should consider moving the U.N. headquarters out of the United States because of it.

The leftist leader said the fact that the war was fought without U.N. authorization showed that Washington has no respect for the world body.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

Its interesting why he would pick the middle of a warzone and the religious center of the world for the UN? perhaps it will be a stablizing influence? Perhaps he also thinks that this will put the US and Isreal at odds somehow by disenfranchising the religious right from its pro-isreal stance?

Very Interesting manuver.

I think Chavez's reasoning is more of a 'you'll pull your finger out and fix the Israeli/Palestinian problem quicker if you have to send your diplomats into the middle of it' idea. Which is highly logical but also highly implausible as bureaucrats are loathed to running the risk of any danger.

I always thought Geneva would have been a better idea than New York anyway.

If we can get all the diplomats that are brave enough to live there we might have a total of 10. I also belive that switzerland is were they schould move to.

agreed, Geneva would be the best place where decisions could be made without influence of the state they are placed at instead of Jerusalem which people should know is controlled by Israel.

We need an "E-UN."

The "diplomats" should "e-meet" and conduct their high-falutin' diatribes to each other via email, and just stay home.

We wouldn't have to fly 'em all over the world

They couldn't claim "diplomatic immunity" and get parking tickets all over NYC/Geneva/Jerusalem that they never intend to pay.

It would reduce translation costs. You wouldn't need 85 translators for french, another 50 for Spanish and a bunch for English and Arabic. You'd only need one per language. And it could probably be done largely by a language 'bot, anyway.

Leaders would have closer watch over their "ambassadors," since they could use an office in Presidente's office. Actually, the various leaders themselves (read: their secretaries) could just do all the emailing themselves.

UN could then use paypal for both donations and various aid packages.

But this won't happen and the UN will never move from NYC:

Geneva has no "broadway."

Jerusalem doesn't have a Greenwich Village. And the golf-courses in Israel suck. Winter rules all year round (!)

Vienna does have Raushing, the dancing/Opera season, but there aren't enough gay bars to support the UN's lifestyle. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Geneva is too clean and orderly. No place to buy a surround-sound plasma TV that just "fell off the back of a truck, buddy!"

Rio Might work, but there aren't enough cab companies to hire all of the younger brothers and uncles of the diplomats

None of those other world capitals has access to the New York State lottery . . . that's the real reason the diplomats live there, even in when the UN is not in session. Plus, they love those hot pretzels right from the pushcarts.

I'd love to see the UN headquarters move outside the United States. We can stop picking up the tab for that useless organization. Maybe another country can put up with all of those people running around and parking illegaly while claiming "diplomatic immunity."

The UN in NYC is just too much of a headache and a waste of money for the city, as well as our nation. Let's kick them out and turn UN headquarters into low-income housing!

And while we are at it, every country can pay the same dues to the UN.

It sounds like a GREAT idea to me.

Can I help them pack? Make trave arrangements? Drive them to the airport? Lets take up a collection to help the UN move out of the US!! I've got twenty bucks that I'd toss in the pot cheerfully.

Yeah, after all, the Swiss were such dolls for keeping for the Nazis the gold ripped from the mouths of murdered Jeews back in WWII, right?

There is no unbiased place on earth. I would like to see the U.N. HQ's removed from American soil, anyway. The U.N. was fashioned so that conflict could be controlled to drive the world to a one world govbernment and that there would eventually be peace, not bliss and happiness, but peace as in the inability to resist.

I have the perfect location...a chunk of rock big enough for a good sized building in a place where the only action will be inside. No-one will go sight seeing, cause car accidents and get off scott free afterwards because of diplomatic immunity, get bagels hot off the cart nor go to see broadway shows or pubbing.

www.canadafreepress.com...

Hans Island ownership is contested by Russia, America, Canada and Denmark. Making it the UN will solve all those pesky international disputes.

Hans Island for the UN headquarters...save WWIII by annexing the island now!

I'm surprised he didn't suggest Havana...

Anyway it's clear this was just meant to be not only a swipe at the U.S. but a swipe at Israel as well since the original plan was for Jerusalem to be an international city under UN control.

But in theory, I don't have a problem with moving the UN out of NYC, it's a pain to have it here.

Why has this thread suddenly turned into baseless attacks against the UN? They seem unsubstantiated given the record of VETOS the United States has issued against resolutions passed by the UN. The U.S. has been the largest impedement for the United Nations; a organization consisting of the world body, and a simply forum of dialouge which has elaborated it's policies and forum to adhere to this ever so conflicting global society.

The U.S should not longer be the head quarters for the UN. In fact, I would push rather for Sweden, Canada, and yes, even Chavez' recomendation for the simple reason that it shows the Middle Eastern peoples that the world community is concerned about it's problems. The UN is the world community, and chiding the UN is chiding the world.

Uh, have a clue....
The United Nations was the brainchild of those who want to create a global government that has the state as the center of everything that is important and the individual as nothing more than those who should want to serve the state. It was created by globalists on both sides of the pond, mainly American and British. The goal is not a forum for dialogue as what you think it is, but a forum for controlling the dialogue and insuring the world's aggression is focused toward furthering the Globalists' agenda.

That is a good reason for the anti-UN sentiment.

As a matter of fact, I think that'll be my topic for next week's newsletter article.

You hit the nail squarely, Luxifero. The UN doesn't belong in NYC any longer.
Any place is better than there, really, and Chavez's idea has merit, IMO.

BTW...the world community needs chiding...they seem like a schoolyard complete with troublemakers, geeks and the usual bullies scrapping over lunch money.

Kevin Mitnick, one of the best known hackers in the world used more social engineering to circumvent technological security measures than "normal" hacking. According to him it's easier and more effective.

But sure, there's a big risk in that too.

Oh, no, Shadow, it has proven to be pretty effective for the bad guys. Look how much sovereignty has been given over by the U.S. and otehr nations, and look how people still think the organization is a good thing?

Look how this tool has been used to bring Communism and Capitalism at odds with one another, while capitalist nations were used to fund communism so that it might be a viable opponent. Notice how the U.N. was used to further Communism while at the same time stifling non-Communistic nations.
Now, in the face of common sense, it can't even agree on the definition of "terrorism". This new "war" will be talked to death while being subtly guided to further the goals of those who see you and me as nothing more than chattel property, and some people actually think that by taking it out of the U.S. things will be changed.
