At least 81 people have been killed and more than 160 injured by a car bomb in a mainly Shia area of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, police sources say.

The device was reportedly detonated by a suicide attacker near a group of labourers in the Kazimiya district. A couple of hours earlier, gunmen killed 17 people in the nearby town of Taji after dragging them from their homes in the middle of the night. The victims, said to be civilians, were shot dead in execution-style killings.

According to an interior ministry official quoted by AFP news agency, the attackers in Taji, 15km (nine miles) north of Baghdad, arrived in the town on "military vehicles" and were dressed as soldiers. They "arrested several [people] before assembling them on a public square and shooting them", said the unnamed official.

More bombs. More than 150 dead and hundreds injured. Al Qaeda claim responsibility and say it is revenge for Tal Afar.

BBC: Scores killed in Baghdad attacks

More than 150 people have been killed and hundreds injured in a series of bomb attacks and shootings across Iraq. In the worst incident, at least 114 people were killed and 160 injured when a car bomb exploded in Baghdad's mainly Shia district of Kadhimiya.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq claimed it had begun a nationwide bombing campaign to avenge a recent major offensive on rebels. In a statement on a website, the group said it acted after US and Iraqi forces attacked insurgents in the northern town of Talafar.

Washington Post: Series of Baghdad Attacks Kill At Least 160

Over a Dozen Bombings, Rocket Attacks Target Civilians and U.S. Military

Targets included crowds of Iraqi civilians and at least three U.S. military convoys. The deadliest attack, in a northwest Baghdad neighborhood, exploded among crowds of Shiite Muslim day laborers gathered to look for work.

Panicked families ran from hospitals to morgues, many seeking more than one dead relative. Armed gunmen--both Shiite militia and Iraqi regular forces--held intersections and closed roads around the city as attacks, and rumors of attacks, grew.

"Explosion! Explosion!" a Shiite militia fighter yelled at one crossing, waving an AK-47 to turn back families looking for their dead.

Al-Qaida in Iraq declares all-out war

At least 10 policemen and five civilians were killed Thursday when a suicide bomber drove his car into a convoy of police vehicles in Baghdad’s southern Dora district, police said. Ten others were wounded in the 8 a.m. attack, said Lt. Thair Mahmoud. Three police vehicles were destroyed.

al-Qaida's leader in Iraq purportedly declared all out war on Shiite Muslims, Iraqi troops and the country's government in an audio tape released on Internet. Al-Qaida claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attacks.

The speaker on the released audio tape, introduced as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, also said his militant forces would attack any Iraqi it believes has cooperated with an ongoing U.S.-led offensive in the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar. "If proven that any of (Iraq's) national guards, police or army are agents of the Crusaders, they will be killed and his house will demolished or burnt — after evacuating all women and children — as a punishment," the voice said in the new tape, which surfaced on an Internet site known for carrying extremist Islamist content.

The speaker announced "all-out war against Shiites everywhere. Beware, there will be no mercy."

Times Argus: Second Day of Iraq Mayhem Kills 31 (AP News)

Suicide bombers inflicted another day of mayhem in the capital Thursday, killing at least 31 people in two attacks about a minute apart that targeted Iraqi police and Interior Ministry commandos. The carnage left nearly 200 people dead just two days.

Al-Qaida in Iraq, headed by Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, claimed responsibility for the bombing campaign launched after an Iraqi-U.S. force of 8,500 soldiers stormed Tal Afar, an insurgent bastion, this week.

Al-Zarqawi then purportedly declared "all-out war" on Shiite Muslims, Iraqi troops and the government in what the United States has called a desperate propaganda campaign to derail the political process.
