Go back to Germany you Nazi!

I am guessing that you are not black, not poor, and have food and water for your family.

Not all of these people with guns in NO are THUGS. If I had to be out in NO I would hope that I have a gun for self protection, you see its my right as an american citizen to own and carry a weapon.

And, I thought that in America we all believed in Presumed Innocence until found guilty after a fair trial by a jury of your peers.

This isn't a Blockbuster MOVIE you are watching this is REAL LIFE... and Life above all things is most precious.

These are OUR fellow Americans we are talking about for Christ's sake.

We are talking about the Death Penalty being decided in the field by law enforcement officers... when many states have outlawed the death penalty years ago...for people who were actually tried and convicted of the worst crimes.

This is NOT my America.

I would be terrified to have a weapon in my home or around my kids, but I also imagine what it would be like if Washington D.C. suddenly came under attack and 500,000 people started heading for the hills.

What would happen days later if there were no utilities, no fuel and no clean drinking water and FEMA
was no where to be seen hiding under Mt. Weather?

The tragedy unfolding in New Orleans makes this a very real possibility and now many people like myself
will start thinking about survival.

No matter how much I may wish to open my doors and my well to help the unfortunate, it may not be safe to do so.

Why do you think all this upsets so many people.

What if we're next?

People - we have to get off the racist and poor garbage. It is only distracting from the real problem.

The real problem is imcompetence!!!!! Unite on that. Otherwise, the whole thing just will get bogged down in the poop!

Honestly, there are way too many people who are going to get a false sense of security if we don't focus on the real problem here. INCOMPETENCE plain and simple!

OK MSNBC reported that they were renegade shooting the workers from the bridge, and the police shoot them protecting the workers.

I will go with what MSNBC said.

Insulting each other is not going to help anyone like Relentless just point out.

Honestly, this is another item to add to the list of horrible things that have happened.

The official news report that is coming from all Television outlets in the US is that a group of engineers was crossing the bridge and gunshots rang out.

The gunshots came from a group of people (race was never mentioned) who were firing unprovoked at the engineers.

The response was with deadly force because they were faced with deadly force.

The motives are still unclear obviously. Maybe it was a desperate group of people who shot them because they thought they had food.

We can not say from the comfort of our homes.

All I can say is regardless of the political garbage that people will throw up over and over again, the only thing that holds true is that this is the biggest tragedy I've ever seen.

This seems to be the most recent report that I could find. It pretty much covers everything. From the shootings to the suicides of two New Orleans police officers. It also covers a very sad press confrence with Aaron Broussard, president of Jefferson Parish. Who is crushed by his Mothers sensless death because of little or to late rescues.

I think that this is a time that all Americans should be re-evaluating there entire thought on what America is supposed to be about and what America really is.

This was announced on the news hours ago. I don't know why the online news services have not updated the news to show what was said on tv. The people that were shot were shooting at police officers when the officers opened fire.

No reason to be out in the streets shooting at other civilians, police officers and first aid responders who are trying to help these people.

You can own a gun, if you are a law abiding citizen, but you need to carry a concealed weapon permit to have one while you are in the streets, and even with a concealed weapon permit you are not supposed to go around with a gun in plain sight...that's why it's called a "concealed" weapon permit....

These criminals, and others, were shooting at police officers, first aid responders and other civilians they were not "innocent."

Exactly, that's why people can't go around in the streets with guns shooting at whoever they want....

The people that are trapped and have not resorted to looting, killing etc, yes they are regular fellow Americans, the others who are shooting, killing looting, raping and pillaging are criminals.

We are talking about police officers shooting at people that were shooting at them and yes, they do decide in what situations they can open fire.

When someone shots at a police officer the police officer is going to shoot back... the police officer is not going to wait for the criminal to kill him.

You are welcomed to go to and live in any country you like if you think police officers shouldn't be shooting at those that shoot at them....

why don't the Officers use Non Lethal Weapon Systems?

Why are we killing our own people?

Even our worst criminals are given a fair trail by their peers before we send them to the electric chair... which Most States have OUTLAWED The Death Penalty.

But in New Orleans the officers have Shoot to Kill Orders.

When police officers feel that they are in imminent danger, no matter where they are in this country they have the right to fire on the suspect or suspects. Those are everyday occurrences. Never mind the situation in New Orleans where nothing is as this country has ever seen. When people are going to take a situation like this and bring violence into the mix they are bringing it on themselves.

Jeeze, can't you see this is an exceptional circumstance. It'd be all good if the Ofc's there could just ask those firing on rescue workers, raping children, and car/boat jacking to just lay their weapons down and turn themselves in. But guess what? That ain't happening.

I have no problem with the police there eliminating those making the problems in this unfortunate area worse.

Wow, first you criticize someone for jumping the gun without knowing enough, then you go and do the same. So quick to cry fowl. It's almost like you're hoping for something to go wrong so you can complain about it.

Forgive me for being the voice of reason, but am I the only one who thinks this falls under the catagory of natural selection?

It is utter foolishness to brandish a weapon while approaching other armed people, esepcially police, especially in such a tense situation as they have in New Orleans. There's a bit of common sense that you should be able to excercise if you are going to carry a weapon.

Unless it comes out that these gentlemen raised their weapons over their heads and opened the bolts, yet were fired upon anyway, I will have to conclude that the blame lies minimally with the police, somewhat with the contractors for being careless while carrying weapons around police officers, and mostly with the contractor's boss and the police officer's superiors for the lack of coordination. When armed friendlies are going to be approaching a defensive position of some kind, informing the checkpoint ahead of time is extremely important for preventing friendly fire. When this is not possible, those doing the approaching have to excercise maximum caution.

Edit to add: Not your America? Cut the drama. This is the same America it always was. There were no good old days. This universe is a really screwed up place to live, period. America is far from perfect, but it's sure as hell one of the best shows in town.
Try somewhere else if you like, but you'll find that it's not your UK either if you should be caught up on either side of unrest in Northern Ireland.
It won't be your Spain the minute the Basques go back at it, or if some innocent Basque is mistakenly arrested or shot.
I hope you're not a patriot if you move to Denmark, because not your denmark won't let your kids put a flag patch on their backpack for fear of offending Muslims.
Not your France suppressed the military of Cote d'Ivoire so that they couldn't defend themselves against an invasion by Muslim illegal aliens from their Northern neighbors, not to mention being just as dirty in the Iraq scandals as we or anyone else.

This list goes on. My point that it's not only not your America, it's not your unvierse. The perfect world you miss never existed. This isn't Nazism, it's a mistake in the midst of a natural calamity made worse by yet more mistakes. That's the universe for you.

Police Shoot and Kill Gunmen in New Orleans
Cindy Clyne
Sunday, September 04, 2005 5:54 PM

It's the worst explosion of gun violence yet in New Orleans.

Police shot eight people carrying guns on a bridge Sunday, killing five or six of them.

It happened as police escorted a group of engineers over a bridge connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

The engineers were there to make repairs to a canal. A Spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers says the contractors were under fire from gunmen but none were killed.

In the well trodden genre of sweeping generalizations, this is the sweepingest superlative extreme to be found in the past couple of hours in the "universe" of ATS.

There are far better and far worse places in the universe to be than the US of A. But there aren't as many places as "screwed up" as what the US has become in five short years.

If the emotions of the event have gotten the better of you then please take ten, get yourself a cold or hot beverage of your choice and chill out a bit.

Even those of us not directly affected by these tragic events have had an emotional responce to this debacle (Myself included) . Lets maintain the ATS tradition of rational informed discource and above all Denying Ignorance.
