Well, for example ...
The Kyoto protocol limits greenhouse gas emissions to try to counter "globalwarming", which means it limits usage of resources, which means it,
among other things, slows down technological development. Among other things being developed are alternative energysources and fuels.
What would happen to the oil companies if a cheap, effective, renewable and environmentally friendly fuel/energysource were to be invented? They'd go
bankrupt.
But now they can without too much fear raise the oil prices (I'd imagine this too slows down development), because there is no substitute for oil at
the moment, and the current world economy will not survive without a cheap energysource like oil.
Another thing gov'ts and elites gain from the globalwarming scare is more control. They also get more of that via other scares, like terrorists.
Fear is a powerful tool.
