Alright calling all gun bashing thread hijackers. State your case.

I am a Right-Wing-Bush-loving-Evangelical-Christian who carries a concealed weapon and not just any weapon but an evil black Glock 17 handgun with a round chambered and the gun holds 18 round which it fires in semiauto (to quote the brady campaign) "can fire 10 rounds in 3 seconds and has no reasonable sporting purpose" and I'm damn proud of it!

I am everything that is wrong with the world and certainly everything that is wrong with America and if I melt down my gun (so I'm told) violent crime in America will cease to exist!

So lets hear about it. Tell me what a scumbag I am and how I've taken the second amendment out of context and how I have no right to own a gun and have no right to defend myself. Let me have it!

and I own an assault rifle...yes more than one and they have 20 and even 30 round magazines and are evil communist terrorist AK-47's!!!!

Lets not forget the classic:
My gun's killed less people than Ted Kennedy's car.

Come now. I know someone has a problem with this. You liberal types are creeping all over the board.

Will it piss you off if I tell you I took my 5.5lb glock trigger and lightened it to 3.5lbs? I did and it feels good. Mmmm...... It's soo dangerous now it should be illegal.....

I have one of the 32 round mags that looks menacing.
What would anyone need 30 rounds for??

From the right on through every word of three posts, I can't say I've ever seen anyone bait a troll hook better.

Problem is the fish in this pond are smarter than you.

Well thanks for personally insulting me and you're right maybe I went overboard with the sarcasm.

But this is the "slug fest" area of the Political Forum so I figured what the heck?

This thread is created because of a political derailment of the following thread.
www.abovetopsecret.com...

It's funny how I create a thread to stop the political derailment of my thread (on ATS) by creating this one and I get the 2000 point deduction that was created to prevent what was happening in the other thread. I thought this was what "slug-fest" was all about. Keep the profanity and death threats out and have at it. Ok I haven't been around ATS for that long and apparently I was wrong. It is extremely frustrating that I'm getting slapped on the wrist for everything. Sometimes you need to give new posters a little push as opposed to a giant shove or a punch in the face.

Here is a quote of the new rule:

Soon, a new level of warning will be in place for ATS-only. When we see obvious derailment of the discussions of issues on ATS, a 2,000 point warn will be applied with a stern warning that the next such warn will result in immediate banning.

So what happened to the part about this being in place for ATS-only?

This is the political forum and I'm getting hit with something that obviously doesn't apply and had no warning or knowledge of in the first place. Nice.

With that in mind, we understand that current environment of political polarity inspires many members to find an outlet to vent their frustration against the "other side". Please do so within the PTS forum where open debate about political ideology is both encourage and embraced. But from this point forward, no not derail issues on ATS forums.

So I vented my frustration. Oh but apparently that was against the rules. Or was it? I'm confused.

What I want to know is how can any post to start a political debate in this forum not be considered baiting? Maybe I'm just not allowed to make cracks about liberal types.

I find that whenever I start getting into political debates some liberal moderator always slaps me with whatever they can. One line post etc...

It does seem that those arguing from the liberal point of view are given quite a bit more grace. Is that a cop out? I don't think its a coincidence that I get penalized for something everytime I get into politics.

I wonder if RANT would have put the smack down on me if I had made a similar post for abortion rights.....didn't think so.

Interestingly enough RANT doesn't seem to be assigned to moniter this particular forum anyway.

Interestingly enough ......I am.

I am as Conservitive as they come and Rant beat me to the warn. There are plenty of those "Liberal Types" Bitching about getting slapped with the 2000 point fine too.

I suggest you use the complaint feature or take it to U2U. There will not be another warning.

I am a avid Gun owner and hunter too and firm beliver in the second admendment myself. (Not to mention Libertarian, so dont even start the right left crap)

I am going to go out on a limb here and actually post a response to the original post. I would personally be interested in imas' response, so here goes.

I live in Australia which, as you may or may not know, has extremely tight security regarding firearms, especially in the wake of the Port Arthur Massacre. I grew up in a small town in the bush where gun ownership and usage was common. I am a member of a pistol and a rifle association and frequently take part in both organised shoots and hunting on my family's property. My family owns a total of 9 guns and I personally own just the one. My family was quite dismayed when the gun buyback scheme was initiated here in Australia. This was a program whereby the government declared speciifc types of guns, including all automatic and semi-automatic weapons illegal and bought them back from their owners, often at a significantly lower than market value. We gave back a number of guns and were disappointed at how little we received in compensation.

Having said all that, however, I am not against very tight restrictions on gun ownership. Having grown up around guns all my life, I am very aware of the damage they can do and am familiar with how to handle them safely. I would be terrified to think of significant numbers of people owning guns without having had the experience to know how to use them safely. For this reason, I believe that it should be difficult to get a gun. Not everybody should own them - some people should simply never be allowed to possess a dangerous weapon and I think it is government's job to make sure this doesn't happen. If that means I have to submit to background checks, testing and volumes of paperwork, then so be it. In Australia if you wish to own a gun, you must also be registered with a licensed gun club, which I think is fair enough.

I realise it is different in America, where you have a "right to bear arms" and fair enough. If you want to own a crateload of AK47s then by all means do so. But realise that, whilst you may realise the responsibilities that come with owning such a weapon, others with less experience may not. It is these people that I believe gun control laws should target and, if you experience some discomfort as a result, consider the alternative. If tighter controls mean fewer deaths, not by criminals but through misuse of guns by legitimate owners, should not the controls be tight?

So there is my opinion. Sorry, I guess I'm not really a "gun hater". I actually really enjoy shooting and hunting. But consider people who lack your experience and responsibility. Do you wish it to be easy for these people to purchase and own extremely deadly weapons?

I'm a gun owner due to my profession. I rather wouldn't carry one because it is a lethal weapon, but sometimes you do need it, be it for scare tactics or returning fire when fired upon.
Eventhough my department should be rather safe(just like CSI departments) we still get a case here and there where we are treatend or fired upon.

I myself have been in 4 gunfigts over the last 5 years and had to pull my gun as a treat about 30 times.

On the other hand, registered and official guns aren't the ones that kill most people. Its the illegal guns and firearms that kill people.

Those are also the most abundant in circulation also. Here in belgium, theres millions of guns in circulation, while theres nearly none registered.

Gun control like the US govt is steering to is ineffective and addresses the wrong crowd. They remove the ability of the citizen to protect themselves with registered weapons, while pritty much helping criminals obtain more and more illegal guns.

Uh, criminals break the law, so the AUssie guy, sorry, but gun laws don't work. Like how drug laws don't work, if they did there would be no drugs.

If you ban guns, guess who gets rid of them? The people who aren't dangerous, the ones who follow the law. Oh well, my SKS is awsome, only get to shoot it when I go out to my sisters, she has a huge freaking yard and her own gun range/shooting range set up. As for concealed in Ohio you can if you get some license, but not really able to pay the hundreds it costs to get it.(Classes, forms, papers, so forth)

EDIT: I thought Political Baiting was a no-no. Also agree with Rant, troll bait. But maybe we can bring it back on track.

You're right, of course. Criminals do break the law and banning guns won't do a single thing to stop criminals acquiring guns and using guns to commit crimes. But I didn't say we should ban guns. I said that it should be difficult to legitimately acquire guns. No, gun control laws will not stop criminals, but they may conceivably stop somebody from owning a gun who shouldn't have access to a gun.

To repeat: I do not want to see a ban on guns. I know this would be pointless. But I do think that it should be difficult or at least not easy to legally purchase guns. If you have experience using guns and can demonstrate that you know how to handle them safely and responsibly, then by all means purchase as many as you want. But if you want to buy a gun and cannot demonstrate these things then, I'm sorry, but you shouldn't be given a gun. So, gun ban =
, tighter controls on legitimately bought guns =

Your going to be either really tough or extremely easy.
