I'm sure many of you have heard that there is a major issue going on with the American-Mexican border. Illegal migrant workers are almost streaming across, and if they can do it, of course enemies of America could, too.

However, I just got this link off of Drudge:

Illegal immigrants threw rocks at a Border Patrol helicopter, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing when one of the rocks damaged the rotor, the agency said.

...

One baseball-sized rock gashed the rotor, forcing the pilot to land nearby, said Michael Gramley, spokesman for the Border Patrol sector based in Yuma, Ariz.

So what now? Are these illegals still not illegal until they break some other law in the US besides crossing the border and attacking border guards?

This is getting very old. More and more illegals cross and nothing major is done. I'll bet that fella that downed the border patrol chopper with a rock could be in New York by now.

The sad thing is that if he gets caught committing a crime, does time in a county jail, chances are he'll be let go instead of immediatily deported.

Like I said, this is getting very old and I wish somebody would take this cause up for immediate action. LOCK down the freaking borders! Kick out those who are here illegally! It's a slap in the face to those trying to get in this country legally that this is being let to continue.

Why didn't the border patrol fire back???

I mean, the guy had to make an emergency landing right? A group of people throwing rocks can kill a person easily and can, apparently, damage helicopters.

So if a group of people is attacking US military forces.....why aren't they firing back? (i know why, but, seriously, is it necessary?)

I think i'm more worried about a helicopter that goes down via rock toss. Either that or get this guy a visa, with an arm like that he could be suited up in time for the playoffs.

I see many of these threads at ATS. A lot of whining about the fact that it is happening, but very little exploration as to why.

Why is the bush admin allowing illegal immigrants into your country? What are you afraid of acknowledging about this administration?

The Army will be assisting The Border Patrol in the next few months. They are sending a whole Brigade down to assist them.

Based upon the governments past history on the issue, and being the cynical person that I am, I would see an Army brigade being sent down as an effort to help upcoming senatorial elections, as opposed to the illegal immigrant issue.

President Bush: "Well Vincente, I just want you to know that I'll be declaring a general amnesty in 2008 and closing the borders."

Presidente Fox: "That's wonderful George, I just want you to know that we'll all be in the United States by 2007."

It's no joke people.

People have taken up this cause! The minutemen are still out there patrolling the borders.

Sean Hannity was doing Hanity and Colms, when the minutemen were big in the news as psychotic vigilantes, from the Arizona border. The ACLU had some people watching the incident from afar. At one point in the show, he showed a hole cut in the fence, and just crouched a little bit and went through to show how easily people could get into this country.

The next day the ACLU was demanding the border patrol to arrest him for coming across the border illegally. Illegal aliens can do it, and we need to protect them, but if anyone tries to stem the illegal tide, they want them arrested. There is a double standard.

There are two reasons, as far as I can tell, Bush isn't doing all that he should on this issue. First, politics; people are insanely defending these illegal's rights to be here, like the governer of Arizona, when she said that an illegal alien hasn't broken the law until they do something else.

The other reason is money; many southwestern farms and the like rely on labor at near slave wages to turn a profit. So, to keep money coming to them, it pays to turn a blind eye to all these illegal aliens coming to work for peanuts.

Case in point, my dad used to be a fireman. They walk into a factory on a firecall, and a guy comes up to them asking what they're doing in very broken english. They're trying to figure out what's going on, who this guy is, but there's a language barrier. My dad asks to see his green card, and the entire factory cleared out.

The next day my dad was called into the chief's office. He was told that, under no circumstances was he ever allowed to say that. The chief explained that the factory owner lost all his employees' work that day, and had contacted city hall as a result. Rather than citing the factory owner for employing illegals and deporting those that worked for him, my dad was told never to say the words "green card" :shk:

As to the choppers the border patrol uses, there's two things. A helecopter, with a well placed shot, can be taken down. Our attack choppers have their roters protected, but the technology is pretty new. You may not realize, but without the tail rotor, a chopper is in a major pickle and usually crashes hard while spinning like mad so no one can get out who isn't thrown out. This rock damaged the tail rotor, forcing them to make an emergency landing. It is expected the chopper will be back and running in two days. Not major damage, but enough to impede flight severly. Plus, a rock is pretty darn hard. Though that rotor is spinning pretty fast, a rock against thin metal is going to damage the metal, though the rock may be shattered. I'd like to see your helecopter design that could prevent a rock from damaging it.

As to the arm on the person who threw it, from the article it sounded like all of them were attacking the chopper. There has been no report how low they were flying, either, but if they came across a pack of 25 coming into this country, they were probably pretty low to check them out.

Finally, I'm with you, Nygdan, what's the deal with our armed services, under attack, not being able to defend themselves without a major political incident resulting? If the crowd turned hostile to the agents in that chopper, they had two choices: jail or death. If they defended themselves, there would be a very brief investigation amidst the outcry of soldiers firing on innocent, unarmed "undocumented workers" trying to get a better life. If they take it, they die. They were very lucky the crowd didn't turn on them.

Actually, they will be patrolling the border. We are going down there not only to patrol the border but for training purposes. It will be a good way to train new soldiers.

So what are your orders in the event that you're attacked as these guys were? Are you to fire back, or just take it?
