Okay writers and poets, this is a quickie contest which will last only until Friday 8/26/2005. A little something to keep you going until the next Short Story contest which will most likely begin in September. Now while this may seem an easy task, writing a haiku can be quite difficult for some of the more prolific writers, because word choice now becomes more important since long narratives and descriptions cannot be used to get the point across.

I hope you are all familiar with the term Haiku. If not, get to know it. A Haiku is the shortest form of literary writings which gets it's basis from Japanese culture. It consists of only 17 syllables, making up 3 lines of 5-7-5 syllables in each line.

Links on Haikus:
www.toyomasu.com...
en.wikipedia.org...

Now for this quickie, you will post your submission IN THIS THREAD in the form of a reply. You may still ask questions/make comments or what not, but not start a new topic to write just one haiku.

Since you've read the basics above and know the rules, now it's time for the theme. CONSPIRACY or IGNORANCE

Any of the two words above should be your inspiration when composing your Haiku. You may only submit 2 entries, one on each word, but remember the word itself does not have to be part of the Haiku, just the inspiration for it.

3 prizes: 1000 ATS to 1st Place
750 ...... to 2nd Place
500 ...... to 3rd Place

And to show you that this is not hard at all, here's my haiku....

Conspiracy is (5)
What motivates me to look (7)
For lies told outright. (5)

Now why don't you give it a try

Cool bananas. You're so good to us, worldwatcher.

I've never written a haiku before, so no laughing:

Conspiracy
No need to wonder
There’s nothing there so don’t look -
What did we tell you?

Ignorance
Ignorance is bliss
Believe us when we say this
You don’t want to know

Can't wait to read what other people come up with.

Kewl beans! I just love a quickie and now were having a contest to boot!

Since we can only post a grand total of two I think i'll wait till friday to post my entries. I can write a few each night on the subject and then on Thursday night pick out my favorites. Thats probably the sanest way to go about it.

Thanks WW. We love you

Finally the catapillar has burst from its cocoon, to reveal a shark, with a machine gun.

I'm going to wait a while before entering my 2 Haiku's. I want to make sure they aren't horrible.

I know the feeling Void, I know the feeling.

I sat here for awhile and wrote six and all I could think was, maybe the next one will be better

At this rate I should have about 20 or so to choose from come Friday. Which brings up another question.

Hey WW, After I choose the two i'm going to enter into the contest, would it be ok to post the ones I wrote but didn't choose to enter? I mean, creative endeavers were meant to be shared. Basicly, list my two official entries then in a defferant post list the ones I wrote but didn't feel like they were my top two. I thought i'd better ask before I just posted the things.

Love and light my friends,

Wupy

Oh my god, I never really understood just how much I suck at Haiku. In fact I've been staring at the cursor, it's just blinking, and nothing is coming out of my head. Anyone who can do it well rocks in my opinion. Good luck to everyone who enters, I think I'm gonna sit and stew on this one for a day or so.

BTW, what's a syllable?

I'm gonna suck at this one.

Conspiracy

Cold snow in summer,
your truth feels so ominous;
A lie is a lie.

Ignorance

Ignorance is snow,
erudition is summer;
Bask in the sunlight.

This is about all I could come up with. Haiku is silly in a way, but never the less, this is a fun little exercise to get the old brain working. I had to dust off the thesaurus AND the dictionary to get the syllable thing to work right.

Thanks WW, quick little challenges like this are fun. Points or no points, we need more of these. Good luck all!

Knowledge is power,
Mountains of truth wait for thee,
So become a miner.

Ignorance is bliss,
valley's of ignorance await,
Don't get lost in them.

Man, those were horrible. They border on the Vogonic!

This is a good way to do it. A syllable is a clap of the hands - for example ba-na-na ( is 3 claps) ripe (is 1) Oddly (is 2) and so forth... If you feel silly clapping do a stomp. Pretty soon you will be doing it in your head or talking outloud like a nutter.

What you are trying to do is a 5/7/5 verse. There are others rules in haiku but this is the traditional classic method.

Haikus are great cause they are simple and beautiful but ALAS also very difficult. Simplicity is not easy and to pare things down to the very essence is no mean feat. Japanese Haiku masters spend 50 years or more - sometimes their entire lives searching for the right one. The perfect haiku is as rare and as unique as a snowflake.

Saying that though, when you write one it can be fun and challenging and when you finish you can stand back and be proud of it no matter what anyone else thinks. Some of the ones people have posted have been really good.

So give it a go.

I might as well try this because I'm still about a bazillion posts away from chat.

The eyes see the self
Wherein a heart sees the soul
Behold the discord.

Dang, forgot to add a period.

We can not let it.

I'll add another later.
