Johnny Depp fired the cannon to spread the ashes of the author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,"

Thompson shot himself on Feb 20 at his home near Aspen, Colorado. Depp financed the $2.5 million Saturday night Blast-off.

Stars and Politicians alike attended. Bill Murray -- and former Sen. George McGovern, D-S.D., and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass....just to name a few.

Thompson's friend and neighbor, Don Dixson, said it was a fantastic crowd. Half of the people here look like Keith Richards. Imagine that?
