It seems Gov. Bill Richardson is serious about putting an end to the flow of illegal immigrants into his state. On Friday, he initiated a State of Emergency along his 180 mile border with Mexico and pledge $1.75 Million to combat the border.

"Recent developments have convinced me this action is necessary— including violence directed at law enforcement, damage to property and livestock, increased evidence of drug smuggling, and an increase in the number of undocumented immigrants," Richardson said in a prepared statement.
He toured the area near the busy border town of Columbus by helicopter and on the ground Friday before announcing the new initiatives.
The Mexican government, which has long opposed any increased border fencing, immediately criticized Richardson's actions.
Southwestern New Mexico residents praised the moves and said even more are needed.
"This is a great beginning," said Luna County Commissioner Rick Holdridge by phone. "What the governor's done is right on the money."
He and others said a broader solution is needed to address the problems caused by hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who cross the border into New Mexico every year.

The $1.75 Million pledge seems to be paying for, among other things, Increased state and local law enforcement, A new state Homeland Security field office that should be up and running within two weeks, probably in Luna County, and a fence to protect the 20-acre Columbus Stockyards, which lie right on the border and, with only decaying wood barriers, are an easy place for illegal crossings into the United States.

"I'm taking these serious steps because of the urgency of the situation and, unfortunately, because of the total inaction and lack of resources from the federal government and Congress," Richardson said.

"I share his frustration," he said in a telephone interview. "We have been doing what was possible, but our efforts in Washington to get the U.S.-Mexico border made a priority have not been entirely successful."

In my opinion, IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME one of our politicians stood up to what the American people seem to truly want.

"We are dedicating every resource available to us as legislators, trying to galvanize action to make our country more secure," he said in a telephone interview.

It also appears the Governor is meeting with the Minute Man foundation as part of this sudden increase in Border patrol: Source

I am glad that one state has finally stood up to the pressure of illegal immigrates, I only wish that this was displayed on a larger scale, maybe California and Texas join in? This is showing very promising that maybe we might take illegal immigrates more seriously and start enforcing new laws that could help with the control.

Other ideas that I have heard is the rumor of making it so you needed a green card to get a Drivers License. I have just heard about this a while ago I have no idea what has been made of this idea.

I really wish CA would take border control into their own hands. I would not be surprised if CA's population is now over 50% Mexican. I'm betting a large majority of them are illegal. And why not?

The fact that they're breaking the law simply by being here doesn't seem to be of concern to our government or law enforcement. On the contrary, local police have been instructed to avoid citing Mexican drivers for mundane offenses, for fear of reprisal from civil liberty groups.

I wonder what percentage of illegal mothers are receiving welfare and medical, while their husbands work under the table? The Anchor baby immigration bill grants automatic citizenship to any baby born in this country. In return this allows the parents to stay legally in the country and eligible for welfare and medical.

Several of the illegal I work with take pleasure in taunting me because I must work for a living while their wives get to stay home and collect benefits. They seem to get a kick knowing they have the best of both worlds unlike the average tax paying citizen.

Her in the East Bay the illegals seem to occupy most of the local jobs. Everywhere you look, there they are. Sub contracted by Caltrans, they do most of the road work Hired by building companies, they do the majority of new construction. They can be seen in every neighborhood doing yard maintenance and hold the majority of service jobs in restaurants, garages etc.

And we wonder why CA and many other states are going broke. Could it have something to do with the millions of workers not paying their share of income tax while sucking off our government? Ya think?

Our government is totally to blame for the country's current predicament. I certainly don't blame the people for wanting a better life. But the one thing I totally cannot abide is their blatant contempt for America and their arrogant refusal to assimilate into our culture. They segregate themselves socially from most Americans and learn only enough English to hold down their jobs. Most of the stay at home moms make no attempt at all to learn our language.

I've had coworkers I thought were my friends ridicule and belittle me when they thought I couldn't see them. I was devastated when one I felt particularly close to for several years, ended up stabbing me in the back. He spit in my drink and didn't know I saw him do it. He continued kissing my ass until I made it clear, I knew.

Although I've tried for years to exercise tolerance, experience has rendered my view on illegal, extremely jaded.

Illegal immigration takes jobs from legal Americans of every ethnic background.
Especially unskilled or low skilled lower wage jobs.
It drives the market price down with illegal labor.
You also end up with a stratified society where one class thinks it is its birthright to rule over another. That creates a society led by stupidity.

More than that it creates an illegal underclass,
that cannot help but become cynical as they have to deal with criminal elements who get rich off them as they work for paltry wages without benefits.
That includes the criminal corporations that wink and hire them as well as the border traffic mafia that takes $1,500.00 from them for fake IDs and SS numbers.
It is very easy for them to see the only way they will truly proper here is turning to crime.
We are creating a rapidly growing community that will be pushed further and further into lawlessness.

Finally a State Govenor willing to stand up and expose the job the Federal government is failing to do.

This govenor and the minutemen of Arizona are the heros and true patriots of America.

The US military is just the mercenary pawn of corrupt corporate America and their patsies in Washington. They are people working for a corrupt government for a paycheck. It is hard to think of them as patriots. Some of them may be good people but they are not patriots.

I don't really know if you can make that distinction Slank. Not really disagreeing, but the folks in the military are a pretty patriotic bunch, I know a bunch of them. However, that doesn't make the folks above them as patriotic or as interested in American interest. When you are in the military, you do what the government says you should do, ala Viet Nam, and other debacles since then. by the same token, there have been a few times when their interventions were warranted and lifesaving.

It seems that Bush is unwilling to do anything about this problem, so the only way it will be solved is by the individual states. Kudos to the guv for taking a stand. Now if the other states will follow suit, we'd see progress.

This anchor baby bill has got to be re-visited, and maybe eliminated. Its days of usefulness are over.

We also need to work out some arrangement with Vicente Fox and his band of thieves, to help stop the flow of illegals from his back yard into ours.

If you are the tool/pawn of evil don't you functionally become evil as you produce the results of evil policies?

They may think they are patriotic, but that just helps them not see the evil they are being used to create.

Waving a flag doesn't make you a patriot.
supporting the ideals behind the flag make you a patriot.

Guarding a nation's border is the most basic of all the functions of a nation state.
The minutemen are doing that for no money as they get called names by the Deserter Bush, while the government is pandering to crooked corporations that want illegals to hire as slave labor with no benefits.

Patriots do what's needed when its needed and use their brains.

Mercenaries are people who fight for others for money. A lot of the time they aren't the smartest guys around.

You have to ask yourself - why doesn't the government seem to care about across the border illegal aliens?

Why is it that legal immigration can be so tough, and yet, the effort to stem illegal immigration isn't nearly enough?

I also have to comment, in many cases, illegal immigrants do jobs that no one else will do. For example, my parents are farmers, and, every year they pay migrant workers to hoe and weed their crops. They've tried to find other venues, but even teenage kids won't do it. Not for what farmers can afford to pay. And trust me, they'd much rather be paying someone else. It's a sore point with them.

True, Illegal immigrants do perform those jobs that many would not. Not just because of the job itself but also due to the wages that the jobs pay.
The problem though is that by allowing the illegal immigration to continue unchecked will only strengthen an already strong under (and ilegal) social caste.
It will also drain the govermental resources that are already under tremedous strain, that are in place for those who are either natural born americans as well as those immigrants that are here legally.

I think a better solution to stop illegal immigants is to crack down on hiring illegal immigrants, it only costs a mexican $100 to get a business Visa, but if they can get into the States and a job for free they will do it. All employers need is to photocopy the Social security card and they would catch 2/3s of the illegal immigrants since most of them jsut use some friends SS number.

I live in wisconsin and the last want ad my workplace put in had 80% hispanic applicants. with only a small fraction of them being bi-lingual. I hate to see how bad it is on the southern border states

Well,
To the people in New Mexico I really do think they are going the right way in controlling the illegal imm.

For the Government of Mexico to get angry at New Mexico for doing this, lets just remind Mexico that
1. Illegal Imm.'s get free federal health care
2. Free Schooling (in some states)
3. Free driver license (in some states) which is scary enough because if they can READ english or SPEAK english then how are they to abid by the state and federal laws.
4. Most don't have legal S.S. #'s. How do I know this.
Example: If you go to Ft. Worth, Houston, Dallas Texas to the hispanic districts you can see that they make FAKE S.S.#'s, Driver License, and Green Cards. Hell, the sign even says " FAKE I D's " and the cops don't do a darn thing about it. Amazing.

Here in Texas we have our own problems with the boarder towns. There is rampate drug rings that are opperating and you have to remember Texas would be the last to do something because our President is best friends with the Mexican government and President. Plus, the border towns are corrupt or over ran. If you haven't heard look it up on google. Just last month over 700 police in a small Texas down were fired or arrested for being "in" on letting drug cartels, traffic everything from cocain to meth. into the state.

This action is just the beginning I think of something that should be taken into consideration for more boarder states.

Way to go New Mexico, You have one supporter in Texas!

It is more than past due and ‘high’ time elected officials got out of their ‘class’ element and view first hand what is truly happening inside their area of governance.

It is refreshing to see one elected official that will give up at least one day of ‘publicly paid for’ privileges and perks to step down and view personally the happenings inside the constituency and act appropriately. Keep it up! Hoorah!

Gov. Bill is one savy hombre. When he runs for President in o8; his record of protecting the homeland by protecting the borders is going to give the GOP fits because of their inaction.

Prediction: GOP govs.,senators and reps will be jumping on this bandwagon in droves but it's to late.

Prediction #2 : Arnold will make a feeble attempt to copy Gov. Bill in Sept.
But he will be hard pressed to answer "why now"

I'm a Republican and Bill Richardson has my vote for showing some Real Courage unlike President Bush that for some reason is scared to death of President Vincinte Fox.

The reason why bush (ment with a little "b") is not doing a damn thing is because he and Fox are friends. He has helped bush with his oil company and Fox has helped him when elections down here from the hispanic supporters of Fox.

That is why we have so much trouble down here. bush is the type to get what he wants out of who he wants and then not help out others that need it.
