If the shuttle ever lands in Europe, or even in Hawaii, they'll still use the 747 to transport it, however it would take a month or more to prepare it. They'd have to remove the engine bells, and as much equipment as possible from the shuttle to get it as light as they could, so the 747 could have enough fuel to make the trip.
