Here is a thread about what people claim to be Britains greatest warship, The HMS Ark Royal R09:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

And another one about the new CVFs.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Remember seeing the HMS Invincible back in 2000 on the River Mersey.

It also resembles the USMC Assault Ships like the 'Tarawa' and 'Iwo Jima' class ships.

Wasnt a Royal Navy Carrier converted to an assault ship for the Royal Marines?

There may be a chance the 'Invincible' could undergo Flightdeck Expansion but it probably would carry so-many aircraft unless it has its hangar bay expanded too. It would be just under the size of the R09 or about the same as the 'Viraat'(Ex HMS Hermes) not sure.

What ships were they DW? I can only think of HMS Ocean, but even she isn't "soley" for the use by the RM

Well ocean for one.
Ocean is an amphibios assault ship, last time I checked dem sky rats dont do much assaulting on the ground..
I believe the two alnion ships and now there are 4 more ships JUST for the marines and the army.

As sad as it is to see the Invincible go, the new technology coming in is exceptional:

Royal Navy CVF

Loaded with:

F-35 (JSF)

Its about time I think

I'll be the naysayer and ask why does either country even NEED this hardware?
Sounds like the taxpayers of both countries are getting hosed...

To keep a solem promise to a country we almost let down 20 years ago? How about keeping 2 other countries other than our who we pledged to help defend safe?
Without this hardware we will simply be a glorified fishing enforcement agnecy with some serious anti air capability and anti sub hardware. But then again this is the same voice that said we didnt need battleships in world war 1, didnt need carriers in the falklands and that our troops have enough money to get thier kit.

Just got out of hospital and was trawlling the threads and read - with great interest that HMS Invisible was being sold. And I thought to myself, 'Hang On, that can't be right!'

So what I want to know is, how did they manage to get a salvage team together so quick and how come the actual salvage operation was kept out of the news?

After all, I would have thought the Argies would have been jumping up and down shouting, 'You can't do that! We sunk it!'

I'm sorry Chupa101 but I still believe the carriers are just 'pie in the sky'.

Until news is released that the hulls have been laid down and there are pics posted on this site from a reliable source, backed up by 'real-time' sat pics, I won't believe it.

Gordon - I'm still gonna fund Scotland with English money - Brown will find a way to scrap them.

He's going to do it eventually - either that or sell off the rest of the armed forces to pay for them.

As for JSF - Give me a break! Too expensive, too far behind project and, more importantly, too American.

No offense Yanks - I'd just prefer the Typhoon with an arrester hook, is all!

your right fritz,
a typhoon with stregnthened landing gear and arrester hook.
i thought the next carriers for britain x2 and france x1 were
normal ctol but might end up as stovl.

The hull designs are being planned for a 50-year service life and are currently being configured with a ski ramp for Short Take Off Vertical Landing (STOVL) operations. The carrier's service life is substantially longer than the 20-year service life of the selected F-35 STOVL carrier aircraft. The DPA has decided the carriers will be upgradeable to a Conventional Take Off and Landing (CTOL) design, so the option will be available to operate conventional maritime aircraft.

Looks like wait and see development.
Id say the french would want a normal CTOL anyway.

Fritz, I'm not so sure about your assessment that the CVF will be scrapped as a plan.

It is needed, that is without a doubt, but that aside, there has been significant movement over the past year in getting the project up and running.

Here is a good timeline.

A good excerpt from the link says this:

On the British side, the British government wants its shipbuilding industry to begin restructuring in accordance with the Defence Industrial Strategy before it awards the future aircraft carrier (CVF) contract. British yards shipyards are visiting French facilities, and looking to benefit from their improvement – and the French have offered to help, for a price. The quid pro quo is that British shipyards adopt French production standards and methods, and that the British agreed to design changes that accommodate French requirements (provision for larger ammunition storage holds, special secure storage areas the French can use for nuclear weapons, etc.) There is some thought that adoption of identical standards could lead to the building of common sections for the three carriers, but that hasn't gone past the discussion stage yet.

Seems what is holding up laying the hulls down is the inability of British shipbuilding industry to actually achieve the project aims within budget and capability.

British industry needs to re-structure and prepare before it can begin construction. It must be said that this is a product of the Governments own shortcomings with regards to the British shipbuilding industry, so they have reaped what they sowed back in the 80's and 90's, but one aim of the CVF programme is to re generate the industry and provide continuity in jobs and skills.

I'll second you on that one
Browns new Cabinet ministers are practically all Scottish too! Its not fair on English people when Scotland gets its own Government then all the SMP's come down to Westminster taking all the English tax-payer money and voting on how England should be run.

If they want to break the UK up then maybe Scotland should try living off its own money for a year or two, and see what happens to their public services and education then!

/Politics rant

Its not fair on scottish people when they cant control thier own military....the SMP's control 0% of the military and parliment has 0% control over ANY of our military. No offence but we have a right to be part of the UK as much as you do, if you want a of your own parliment then go and complain. The only way we can control or even influence our military is to get involved in the UK parliment.

Ahh, but now you've logged into PTS, that should be it, providing you tick "remember your password"..

PTS is sometimes underused by members.. We should really do alot more there!

Oh, if you should be asked for your passport again by any ginger, skirt wearing, haggis fanatic, just remind them Who conquered Who....
