Russia is controlled by the capital and the oligarchy. That is what 37 % of the Russians believe, while 19% think it is "organized crime" shows a survey, according to Interfax news agency today.

Only 15 % of the Russians believe Putin rules the country, while 12 % hold the bureaucrats are in charge. 1500 persons from 32 regions have answered the study.

Oligarchs they are called who held the political and financial power in the 1990s and purchased state property at auctions in a dubious way.

I think these numbers pretty much resemble what people think in most countries, though organized crime may not be so influential everywhere. Capital rules, there is an oligarchy.

There have been many shifts in power from the Soviet model to the Russian Federation of today.

The Mafia certainly has too much influence on market practices.

Putin may have some influence on the Mafia, but I doubt that there are any direct linkages between all those decent hard working bureaucrats and the Mafia.

Like fun.

But as long as vodka rules the Federation, things are still OK.

The Mafia will be busted down to size in the next 50 years. This is just the wild west days of post-monarchic post-socialistic Russia.

People are probably right that Putin to a quite large extent is in the hands of bigger forces, but so is Bush. I'm not sure if there is corruption among bureaucrats, but you are right about the vodka.

Yeah that is part of the hopefully transistory wild west condition in Russia. But my impression is that we see a lot of good forces also, not least among young people who by virtue of the internet must be well oriented in the West. And Putin is very Europe oriented. If you like to call it NWO well ...
