CIA officials used a sledgehammer handle to beat various prisoners in Iraq, and one official, whose name is classified, would often brag about his abuse of prisoners, according to testimony in a closed session of a military hearing

Link

A CIA spokeswoman, who declined to give her name, would not comment

Is this true ??

The original source is from the denver post.

www.denverpost.com...

The transcript, obtained this week by The Denver Post under a court order, was of a March hearing to determine whether three Fort Carson Army soldiers should stand trial for the death of Iraqi Maj. Gen. Abed Hamed Mowhoush during an interrogation in 2003.

Chief Warrant Officer Jefferson Williams and Spec. Jerry Loper face murder charges in the case.

A third soldier, Sgt. 1st Class William Sommer, has not had final charges approved, though he also was involved in the March preliminary Article 32 hearing.

Chief Warrant Officer Lewis Welshofer waived his hearing but is charged with murder.

In the March hearing, Sgt. 1st Class Gerold Pratt of the Utah National Guard said he saw classified personnel use a 15-inch wooden sledgehammer handle to hit prisoners.

Nice.

I wonder what they "Didn't" Use on Iraqi Prisoners?

Shows just how Close to the Saddam Regime the "New Situation in Iraq" is.

Dangerously Close....

Sadly it probably is, from all the reports I have read it is, here are some links and excerpts from the most important websites on it. here is a link to an Amnesty International report on it.

The one above tells of torture, rape, murder, sodimizing of children all on tape and pictures the pentagon is holding and refusing to hand over despite a court order, I think they are still fighting it out in the courts.
also this one is important too
news.bbc.co.uk...
and last but not least this one, when you hear about this one thinks of a few run amuck cruel soldiers but then one must think of this and it is sickening

Pentagon Refuses to Hand Over Abu Ghraib Photos
The Defense Department is refusing to cooperate with a judicial order to release photographs and videos taken by the military at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. In June, a federal judge ordered the Pentagon to hand over 87 photos and four videotapes to the American Civil Liberties Union because the group had filed a Freedom Of Information Act.

White House Lobbies GOP Senators Not to Pass Anti-Torture Bill
Meanwhile the Washington Post reports the Bush administration is lobbying to block legislation supported by Republican senators to regulate the treatment of detainees held overseas. The bill would bar the U.S. military from engaging in "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment" of detainees, from hiding prisoners from the Red Cross, and from using interrogation methods not authorized by a new Army field manual. According to the paper, Vice President Dick Cheney met last week with three senior Republican members of the Senate Armed Services Committee to press the administration's case that legislation on these matters would usurp the president's authority. One White House official said the bill would interfere with the president's ability to " protect Americans effectively from terrorist attack."

It's astonishing that you can't see the difference between a government approved body abusing a prisoner, and the actions of a rogue terrorist or insurgent.

Just as it's screamingly, painfully obvious that not all CIA members are the same (and thus wouldn't be partaking in this behaviour); it should be obvious to anyone that not all Iraqis are insurgents or terrorists.

If they are abusing terrorists, go for it, heck, give me a go!!! Terrorists are he lowest form of 'life' on the planet. They kill women and children all the time, and for what? If they were just destroying military targets (or trying to) they could be called freedom fighters. But willingly killing innocents is sick.

The problem is here both sides are getting painted with the same brush. It's stupid to claim 'Iraqis' torture and kill their own, this is an outside influence that's doing this. The majority of Iraqis want to get on with living and getting their country back, the Insurgents/Terrorists are hindering that process.

Likewise not all U.S/U.K/CIA service people are bad, just because the actions of a few. Let us not forget that the servicemen are TRAINED TO KILL, perhaps some get a little carried away.

a few bad apples don't make us anything like the animals over there. souljah, the day we pull this little trick of theirs, i'll admit we are becoming like them

step 1) kill a man for not joining your cause.
step 2) wire his deap corpse with explosives
step 3) lay his body in the street
step 4) call his family and tell them where the body is so they can come get it
step 5) as the greiving relatives approach the body, blow them all up
step 6) car bomb the funeral

can you see a difference now ?

Spoken by one who's never been held by either.

It's easy to say that when we're sitting here in front of nice little computers, with our heat and air conditioning, isn't it?

Sure it is.

step 4)missile drop thousand peoples deaths and the US force call the contractor to settle up the body
step 5)where is left over terrorist chased them like a chickens

step 6) and US claims they the liberator and freedom fighters
very unlogic and insane acctually they (US) are.

Yeah if beating prisoners was good enough for the Soviets then it should be good enough for America too. I say its time we got our hands dirty and took the kids gloves off. I mean everyone knows these brutal tactics are effective at winning wars. Look at Afghanistan the Soviets used the tactics of brutality against the Mujahideen and now a pro-communist government is flourishing there.

I dont need to be there to make that easy choice. Id rather have my head not cut off with a dull rusty knife on camera to be shown to the world after days or weeks of beatings.

Big words from you, from behind YOUR nice little computer.

I back my government 100% on how they treat detainee's. If beating them with hammer handles is what they think they need to do to get the intel they think they need then I support it.

I PERSONALLY know more Americans killed or effected by terrorists than I know terrorists that have been beaten by Americans. And as long as thats the case, they can beat them to their hearts content.

It is terrible what the 'highly trained' US military did, but I doubt they intentionally killed those people, the terrorists actually want to kill innocents. There is a difference.

to believe the govt. has the right to mutilate/torture prisoners like this is just plain out ignorant.

just because they are 'terrorists' doesn't make it right to torture them. what kind of example is the govt. making? and don't come with the bull# that they are being treated first class at gitmo .. that argument alone is quite ridiculous.

image if you were falsely labeled a terrorist and you swore that you weren't, but to TRY to get information out of you they'll use these exact same measures, if no worse. how would you feel?
