I find it absolutely reprehensible that people are saying "he got just what he deserved".
Now, that being said, I believe that Goeghan was a truly sick individual, who was at a minimum a serial child molester who needed prison time and
psychiatric treatment.
He received a 10-year sentance on the one charge that they actually managed to convict him of (most of the others were not brought against him either
due to a lack of evidence or statute of limitations). Although never charged or convicted of a previous crime, he received the maximum sentance
available. BTW, this sentance is typically much more harsh that one might get for Armed Robbery, Arson, or 2nd Degree Murder in the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts.
Goeghan never killed anyone. Goeghan never physically harmed anyone. Goeghan DID molest little boys everywhere he went, but does that mean he
"deserved" to die? Why do we kill serial molesters, but we dont kill serial assaulters, or serial theives, or serial drunk drivers, or serial drug
dealers? I mean, who is really more dangerous to society? Is it because his victims were teaan-age boys that we wish death upon him?
Certainly, Goeghan needed to be in protective custody, probably for the rest of his short life, to protect our children from him. But death? I am
reminded of a quote from Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings":
Gandalf, speaking to Frodo, who just wished out loud that Gollum would die:
'Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to
deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. I
have not much hope that Gollum can be cured before he dies, but there is a chance of it. And he is bound up with the fate of the Ring. My heart tells
me that he has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before the end; and when that comes, the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many - yours not
least. In any case we did not kill him: he is very old and very wretched. The Wood-elves have him in prison, but they treat him with such kindness
as
they can find in their wise hearts.'

The whole thing is just so tragic, from beginning to end....
