I just recently went into chat for the first time, and had some good conversation. Then it dawned on me: why hasn't ATS setup a dedicated Ventrilo or Teamspeak2 server for voice chat? Or even a yahoo or similar server and include video as well?

I'm sure this idea has been proposed before, right?

Voice Chat and Video are hard to record the ToS on and to stop people from breaking the rules.

Plus I don't think anyone wants to see half of this lot.

I think IRC would be a great way to have ats chat, Because its very easy to moderate. I have used IRC for years and I find it one of the best methods of online communication. I know im getting ahead of myself here but , imagin ATS with our very own IRC server with numerious channels for different topics , it would be an amazing experince.

Another reason is that 200 posts to gain access to chat is a bit steep for me , Ive been a member since January 04 and still havent got enough posts to get into chat, the reason for this being I dont post if I dont think I have anything solid to contribute.

Just my 2 cents

We do not know this, and we have to insist that members not use illegal drugs and participate in chat. Its against our rules.

The reason why we have a relatively high limit is because one of the functions of the chat program is to conduct and coordinate scholarly research on the various topics that are under the boards ambit. There is also a chit-chatty room, but in the end chat is a real privilege provided by the people at ATS, its not something that is going to be given out to even most members, hence the high qualifications for access and the very easy ways to get banned from chat permanently. Banning from chat (as opposed to temp kicks) are not something that are agonized over, as opposed to bannings, even temporary ones, from the discussion forums. I say that to illustrate how most in moderation and administration perceive chat, as a very high privilige, one that is easily lost.

ATS is not a place to come and chat with people over whatever may be on your mind. ATS does house a chat program out of the kindness of it's heart, and as a service to it's members. Video or speech is not only completely unnecessary, and requires server load and monetary funds like no other, but it basically rules out anyone with a dial-up connection.

I agree wholeheartedly. However, as for an IRC server (which, mind you, is much cheaper and easier to set up) I've a few things to say, namely:

1. See my first sentence or two.
2. It's offsite. That means anyone can join. We can set up services to protect nicks, etc. and we can get ops (moderators) to be there (I'm a very proficient idler, I'd volunteer) but we can't keep out the riffraff. We can make it +k but that adds levels of difficult that are completely uneccesary, and wouldn't even solve the problem. Also, very hard to verify that it is, in fact, your nick you registered. We also can't require 200 posts. (Although, in truth, we could set it +m and +v could mean you've got the required limit)

It's a hassle, and wouldn't work as well to the ends it does here. Feel free to u2u me any servers/chans you frequent, we'll do lunch.

It's a long story why we have 200 posts to get into chat. I wish the limit was smaller. More people would be able to come in. Chat is a great place stop in some time! The reason we have the 200 post limit is because some people broke TOS a large amount. Even though (I think) most peopel were over 200 posts

If you want to use voice and webcams then join the group of ATSers that go on Yahoo Messanger, like Me, CPR, ARP, Relentless, and so on.

It was rather ammusing having me and cpr fight over mic control...that one time with all of us in conference was so great
