How would one destroy a M1 Abrams MBT?

Just curious really as the impression i have is that it's 'virtually' indestructible. How much punishment can a M1 take? Where are it's weak & strong points? What types of situations is it best used? Which ones is it not best used for?

I've seen my cousins in iraq, and family in the first desert storm say they saw M1's taken out with a few rpg's to the back. Just depends on what you use I guess.

The Challenger 2 actually just edges infront of the M1A2 doesn't it? Since it uses the Chobham armour i assume?

Yeah your right.....i am slightly bias!

But i agree, they are evenly matched tanks and it would be a very good battle!

I still believe that UK servicemen are better trained though so that may make a difference!

they both use `chobham`

in the case of the M1A2 it is reinforced with DU

whilst the challenger 2 uses `dorchester` second generation chobham

and that my friends........................ is how you take out an Abrams.

A good DU round from a 125 mm cannon would do it if you hit in the rear or the sides.

I would use a rpg, with a small nuke inside the rpg, that would be enough.

How to destroy ANY tank in three easy steps.....

1. Launch.....


2. Wait.....


3. Tank Gone.....


Job Done.....

Of course if it was a Challenger 2 the British Army would have shot down the missile before the hit.....LOL

Assuming the tank doesnt use some type of dazzler system to disrupt the missile, which various chinese, russian, and american tanks use.

1. Another tank with sufficient ammo to penetrate said M1 Abrams
2. An ATGM or ATGL with sufficient power to penetrate said M1 Abrams
3. A mine with enough explosive power to penetrate or blow the treads off said M1 Abrams

Basically, penetrate the armor, blow the tracks off, or kill the crew.

An ERYX wire guided missile would do a respectable job of it.

not a good idea to expend resources and time to blow up a tread since u only gave it a mobility kill, but it still be dangerous. rpgs can damage to the extent that the crew have to abandon the tank, but u rarely even see an Abrams turret flying in the air like a flying pan. however tank vs tank, moslty have to be a really good tank like Challenger 2, or Leopard to destroy the Abrams. u could however try to put a couple of artillery shells on the road and wait, but that leaves u vunerable to being spotted and get bombed or sniped which has happened to insurgents who take their time planting the bombs. in anicase they all have risks wen taking on an Abrams.

The ERYX system penetrates, almost goes right through it.

just drop a 2000lb bomb on top it, tank armor is always weak up top. The Abrams isnt the invincible warrior the media makes it out to be, it can be destroyed but the difference is that its a lot harder to destroy than older tanks

if the U.S. of A. Air Force allow u to bomb one of their ground buddies. and insurgents in Iraq dont have an air force. so thats no problem to deal with. if lets say war against China, well that be a bit of a problem, but im sure the U.S. Air Force will protect the helpless Army and Marines as they watch the sky.
