The New York Times reported that before the Sept. 11 attacks, the United States had intercepted an al-Qaeda message that bin Laden was planning a "Hiroshima" against America. In a later taped message, released before the U.S. attack on Afghanistan, bin Laden said, "When people at the ends of the Earth, Japan, were killed by their hundreds of thousands, young and old, it was not considered a war crime; it is something that has justification."

The threat of a nuclear device being used in the US is higher than most choose to believe. Countries like Iran who are aggressively moving towards have a functional warhead should be a concern.

Even more so are the abilities of rouge groups like Al Qaeda or faction creating a 'dirty bomb' and smuggling it into the US through the unsecured borders.

Anger in Muslim countries at the United States has never been higher. The desire for an atomic weapon to seek vengeance -- utterly immoral, foolish and suicidal though it be -- is becoming ever more popular.

The M.E. countries have the ability to create one of these dirty bombs already. Due to lax controls of waste materials and equipment, creating a device would be easy enough. Thought they may not be able to create a nuke, a dirty bomb will suit their needs just fine.

Some nuclear weapons experts say privately that it is not a question of if but when the attack will happen.

Just another one of my rants, most of you won’t want to believe this anyway.

The threat of nuclear terrorism has always been there, I sincerely hope that it never happens, as I dont know how the victim would retalliate.

A dirty bomb is an idea that I am surprised hasnt been used yet, we know they have the means, but why dont they use it? Fear? Maybe, but it seems nothing scares these people.

The reason a dirty bomb hasn't been used yet is most likely because there is no actual threat from one. Many people who understand the workings of so called dirty bombs have come forward to explain that the actual damage caused would be minimal. It is unlikely to cause death to anyone not caught in the actual blast and the radiation in the area could be cleaned up using conventional, known means for no lasting affect on the environment. I know I should back these claims up with links but the only one I have saved is to the BBC doc the Power of Nightmares and it's 3 hours long. If you don't believe me go watch it or go do a search. I read articles almost weekly on the subject(or did a year or 2 ago when it was bigger news).

Is it ok to post a like to that documentary? Its inbedded in a news article but its BBC so would I be breaking forum rules by linking to copyrighted material? I won't post it unless a Mod says it's alright.

I've said this before, but if terrorists get a nuke, I expect it to come from Pakistan, not Iran.

As for "dirty bombs", don't believe the hype.
It'd be an expensive cleanup operation, but the likely casualties from such a weapon are exaggerated by media companies looking to grab ratings.

A conventional bomb in a chemical plant loccated near a population center would probably cause a lot more deaths than a "dirty bomb."

Its not like were just waiting for them to develop a nuclear dirty bomb and drive to the city center and set it off. They have to do a lot of things to build a dirty bomb and bring it in the US and we are trying to prevent them form doing that.
With that said we are not prefect and the risk for a dirty nuclear attack on the US is great but its not immediate and I do not believe inevitable that it will happen.

I really don`t think they would have to bring any material in to the US to be successful in the aquisition of a dirty bomb. The way these people operate you really cannot tell which muslim is the extremist. They live normal lives have families friends just like ordinary Americans, and then they get the call to mass murder and they react. They come here and study in our schools and other then stereotyping them we have no clear evidence for suspicion. When we know who they are its usually too late. (Not to discount the efforts of law enforcement arount the world and here in the States that have actually thwarted many terror cell plans.)

But lets be real, as minor as the threat of a dirty bomb may be, they do not need to bring the material here. They already have members working in various fields with the capabilities of obtaining all thay need. You can use some forms of medical waste, possibly chemo treatments to make a dirty bomb. Are there any ME hospital workers here in the States? I`ve worked with some and who knows may have even met a terrorist mastermind. These people are very good at blending in and remaining very quiet about their intentions until its too late for us to react. I wouldn`t be surprised if some may have already penetrated upper levels of US intelligence by becoming members of the FBI or CIA or mabe they just work for these departments in the capacity of a translator.

You just never know who, where and how they are going to strike next. We`re screwed until our government wakes up and stops trying to be politically correct. Its an unfair and bold question to ask but how do you weigh the civil rights of millions against the possible deaths of hundreds, thousands or mabe even millions of innocent men, women and children?

So your concern isn't the idea of millions of innocent American men, women and children dying in a nuclear holocaust? Your concern is how our government will avenge such an attack??? You really got your priorities straight, pal, lemme tell ya...

True...The Paks are more of a threat.

Did any of you get a chance to read the "Planning Senarios" document that was published by the DHS? It was public for like a week before the news caught wind of it and the Gov't pulled it saying it was a mistake to have been made public.

The document goes into great detail on types of attacks and a conventinal explosive near a chlorine plant for example would cause a mass casulty event.

Ohh... Violent fantasies of imminent destruction! My favourite!

You can't beat a bit of the old pornography of violence. Enough to raise the nationalistic horn in all of us!
