This isnt really "Above Top Secret" so mods if this needs to be moved please do it. I just went to fill out an application for the IMAX film at Pensacola NAS Museum. Well while I was there one of the ladies asked me if I would like to get into the IMAX for free because I filled out an application. So I said yes and this had been a film that I had been wanting to see for a while. "Figher Pilot" was the film and it was a fairly good one. It talked alot about project Red Flag out at Nellis Air Force base. Well as it was showing footage of a C-17, I noticed ahead of it was seemed to me looked ALOT like Groom Lake. NOT S-4, but Groom Lake. Is Area 51 and Nellis the same thing or are they just so close together that I am confusing myself ?

Red Flag is run by and is under control of Nellis Airforce Base in Las vegas.their will be a Red Flag exercise Some air operations out of Groom Lake are under Nellis control. Red Flag has nothing to do with Area 51 or Groom. Their are flight restrictions in place during Red Flag that prohibit Red Flag participants from flying inside the "box". By the way for anyone thats going to be in the Rachel area their will be a Red Flag exercise starting August 8th and ending September 2nd. They fly Monday thru Friday and their will be some night bombing runs. The times will be posted on the Nellis Notams about a week prior to the exercise starting.

As hank said, the the two bases are not related. "Area 51" is about 95 miles to the northwest of Nellis.

Don't worry, as far as distance between bases goes, Nellis and Groom Lake are pretty close. A lot of people get themselves confused, they try finding Groom Lake and they end up looking at Nellis. Wouldn't suprise me if they're close like that for the purpose of confusing UFO watchers.

Good Question! No, Area 51 is NOT Nellis. I can see where the confusion is coming from though. Maybe this wil help:

In Nevada, there is a netword of military facilities that cover the center of the state. These bases and test ranges include: Nellis Air Force Base, Groom Lake, S-4, Tonapah Test Range, the DOE Nuclear Test Site, Area 19, a bombing range for Red Flag, and other military areas. All of these military areas are protected within one big security perimiter that is guarded by MP's, Civilain Securty Officers and other security systems. This outer security perimiter that encloses ALL of the Military and Defense Facilities in central Nevada is what people are talking about when they say: Nellis Air Force Range Complex, often simpally called Nellis by military personnel!

Nellis is Not Groom Lake, but Groom Lake is part of Nellis! Hope that makes some sense!

Nellis Air Force base to everyone i know is Area 51....the gov. can say Area 51 doesn't exsist...cause it doesn't...Nellis Air Force base exsists...get it. but i don't know why people focus on Area 51 so much...it was big in the 70s...but there are much more dark places then that now.

Well it's a common misconception. Check a few atlases, look at were Nellis is at. Then look at were Groom Lake is, two totally seperate installations. However as Ghost just said it's all part of the same general complex. But as far as installations go, two different places. Also the goverment doesn't deny the existance of Groom Lake, they publically acknowledged it after a lawsuit in 1995. Something to do with a few workers died from some hazerdous materials of some sort.
