I have been a lurker at this site long enough to know that many of you have knowelege in areas that would be useful in colonizing mars, so let's build a model martian colony.
I am declaring myself king (because it was my idea) now I need ministers and scientists to get this colony off the ground. any one care to get involoved just propose what we need to create a viable independent colony and keep it going.

Starting topics:

First what do we need to make Mars liveable?

Second how do we get there?

Is terraforming an option?

What types of industry could survive there?

We start by re-ordering your priorities.
First is "How do we get there?"
We need to figure out how to get there in order to know how many people and what supplies we can take with us. Only then can we decide if it is feasable and answer the rest of the questions.

My vote on how to get there is real simple. We dust off the "Project Orion" plans and build a few huge unmanned heavy lift vehicles. This will carry a disassembled spacecraft, fuel and other needed resources to a high Earth orbit. The lift vehicles themselves except for the contaminated shielding are the components of our spacecraft. They can serve a living quarters for the people transported up by larger versions of Rutan's Space Ship One. Put it all together and head for an asteroid near Mars and use it for a staging area and for materials needed that couldn't be taken along.

Excellent, can anyone provide us with links to "project orion"? or offer a counter proposal? This idea would still work with using non-violent offenders as first tier settlers.

Would Zanazibars pet sphere Phobos work as a staging area?

if you will not get into the mood involved here (not happy with having your own world)...
why not join us on mars, we have a solid world. and you can found the next great house of mars! Perhaps you could head the ministry of natural resources or the ministry of don't try this again (lol).

well i was actually serious, but being humourous also. and i guess since this mars ball is rolling, i might as well go with the flow. sure i'll head up ministry of natural resources (a.k.a. ministry of keeping it real).

gimme some time to gather my data.

I have seen products that allow the incorporation of household moisture back into the water supply, and of course the waterless toilet what other products exist, or could exist to allow a more recycle friendly worl that we would need on mars?

im guessing that considering we have the feasable knowledge to get to and build a colony on mars, that waste management wont be too much of an issue. i mean, the only thing that hinders us from say, launching bulks of waste into the sun, is the energy to propel these large containers out of the atmosphere.

On Mars at least as I understand it, we won't have room to waste water at all. We will need clean drinking water at all times, and we will need to extract breathable oxygen from water. That is why i bring up waterless toilets and water extraction from environmental humidity.

Also I have greyhounds, if I breed them on mars will they end up being several feet taller after a few generations? Hmmmmmm.

We can definatley use Phobos as a little starship building station, I have no problems with that.

I am also going to need an army, I know Mars is supposed to be peaceful, but safety first!!! Ill get researching right away!!

yea, i dont think the world powers on earth would like us taking over mars and being separate after the billions they've spent researching it. diplomacy will be essential for peace (ie; usually -> give a lot, get very little).

Getting to Mars... HEY, why don't we ask Burt Rutan?!?! It took him what a year or two to get a man into space and back and back up in less than two weeks! With only ONE financial backer!! I think the way to go is to forgo the governments involvement, and go totally with the private sector. You would get more money than what the government would ever be able to give out, and the poeple backing the project would most likely be interested in it.

Personally, I think NASA is just throwing us a bone, and it really pisses me off!! I really hope we seriously are going to establish a moon colony by the early to mid 2010's.

Good concept, but no sense of urgency. How about we throw in some threat. Like a giant Asteroid is destined to hit earth in like 10 years, and we dont have any other option but to get as many of us off the planet and to mars as possible.

Then, money isnt an issue. We have the worlds resources and engineers at our disposal.

Based on that, we would probably be launching as much stuff into space as possible, including water. We would have hundreds if not thousands of launch rockets headed towards mars with food and materials that would be in various locations once we got there.

We would have to force an atmospheric condition but a more sure approach
would be building structures and making them as self contained and as efficient as possible.

Good idea for a thread.

Peace

requesting to be on the soil, agriculture and culinary research teams, discovering what plants grow well in martian soil, I dont need a bigwig job just a few super minifruit trees, tea strains and a fungus that can break down the soil.

plants that need little water but help recycle oxgyen and selected for hydroponic research along with fungus which could ground to break down waste it a natural recycling process.

Heavy social experimenting must take place, single women and men must be in seperated sleeping dorms, relationships must be prefessional turn work shifts, singles can only hang out with other shift workers, couples must have the same work shift, couples wishing to marry must pass screening and licensing, singles with no partner can file for an arranged married upon passing thier 34th earth year birth day, a couple wishing to have offspring must file one year in advance and be put threw screening, upaon approval the couple will be given a fertility shot, each couple is allowed up to 3 childern, upon the 3rd year after birth the child will be tested and placed into a colonial preperation school, the ceremony of colors will be a rite of passage upon thier 12th terrian birthday when the child will be given thier general group color ( think star trek, red, gold, green..etc) of occupation, speciality training takes place upon 12 year to 18th year upon completion the citizen title is given and secondary color is given denoting specility, intership for a term of two years follows, upon completion the shift id tattoo in given on the right wrist one of three colors denoting the shift time yellow - 1st shift, blue for second shift and black for 3rd shift. The giving of the band cemerony concludes with the welcoming into humany ritual where all clothes and life with parents are recylced and the human is given a room in thier year's blockon dorms. There are only allowed a set amount of births a year, half of the licenses for the fetility injection will be every 6 earth months.

The Martian Sciences include but are not limited to: geology, ecology, agriculture, culinary/nutrionists, hydrodymatics will be given red red group color. Example of a MS:agricultural:3rd would have a red with green trimmed uniform with a black band tattoo on the right wrist.

construction:communication:grey would wear a grey with yellow trim and blue wrist tattoo band

The base would function in 3 major roles, research and experiement of future life systems on extra martian and terrian worlds, supply and manufacturing of materials for orbiting space orbital factory spaceport and mars based deep/near space observation and relay for ships and probes.

Under no circumstances will WE allow social engineering to this degree. please as minister of horticlture resubmit your ideas, with out the level of tyranny you have proposed, upon doing so your family will gain the right to claim any one barony that is avilable.

I stand by my previous posting. Lets figure out how to get there first. Then we will know what we can take with us, how long it will take to get there and what we will need to survive.

If you change the scenario to a big asteroid will wipe out the Earth in ten years then the majority of objections to Project Orion go away.
