Airport runways? I don't think so.

Look here.
Is that a building? It looks like it has a carpark and a road leading up to it to.

And this is kinda near Area 51. It looks like those little nacho dips that little kids have for lunch at school.

you can see lots of little 'google 2005' text superinposed on the map, the color of the text is the same color of the x. a prank? a joke?

This "x" is indeed an airport. I looked up the coordinates in NASA Worldwind (USGS topographical map) and found that it was labeled "Bonnie Claire Airport." A quick google search brought me numerous results.

This should cover your needs, though.

But still no clues as to who constructed this airfield, or what purpose it served.

Pretty wierd, there's no roads near it from the actuall airstrip to the little dirt road that I could see, I suppose they were covered over with grass.

Still I great find IMO and it's near Area 51, and that photo was taken in a helicopter so maybe they got saw some other stuff while up there?

Looks like an old grass strip runway.

That's exactly what it is. I have no idea why it's in the shape of an X though.

Yeah, and a little far away from any main roads don't ya think? I mean, why the heck would you land there? It's no where.

I don't know, security reasons perhaps?
There's a dirtroad right next to the runway.

Yeah and it takes a while to get anywhere from it. There's a bigger airport just under the X one I think. Have a look at the satellite link and then pan down and a bit to the right.

EDIT: Oops, nevermind. I was thinking of the airport near the Star of David picture.
