father starts jail sentence

MIAMI -- A father whose son used his gun to shoot a friend started an 18-month prison sentence today.

Michael Southern stood before a judge this morning and was led away in handcuffs. He had been charged with possessing a weapon as convicted felon.

Prosecutors said it was that weapon that took the life of a 10-year-old boy in North Miami-Dade County last year. Southern's son, Christopher, reportedly grabbed his father's rifle and fatally shot 11-year-old Abdullah Iqbal.

The boy told police he was playing when he pointed the gun at Iqbal's head. Christopher Southern is currently at a high-risk residential program in Tampa.
