I really think the Indians should buy the ex-RN FSR2 sea harriers - they allready have BVR capability and can use AMRAAM - and the youngest airframe isn`t yet 6!!

But India alredy have FSR1 sea harriers and just a few months back it was given a major upgrade with a new Israeli pa radar, Israeli Derby BVRAAM and a new aveonics fit.

Also here's some nice speculation :

HMS invincible haeded for the Indian Navy

and this is from www.globalsecurity.org...

HMS Invincible
In mid-2002 the rumor going around London was that the UK would put up the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible for sale in 2006. Since the Indian Navy's plans include several aircraft carriers, it made great sense that the Indian Navy will bid for the Invincible.

HMS Invincible could become the new flagship of the Indian navy in a controversial multi- million-pound deal with the British Ministry of Defence (MoD). The aircraft carrier, along with naval Sea Harrier jets to fly from it, was at the top of Delhi's military shopping list. Britain has three aircraft carriers; the others are HMS Ark Royal and HMS Illustrious. Invincible is due to be taken out of service in 2006.

The Government of India proposed to buy 17 second-hand Sea Harriers from the Royal Navy of the UK. The Government has been collecting information whether there are surplus Fleet Air Arm Sea Harriers. Royal Navy Sea Harriers are said to cost $9 million each and they also suit Indian Navy's requirements. About 29 Sea Harriers are available for disposal. Indian Navy, at present, has 17 units of FRS 51 model. Indian Navy might consider going for total fleet replacement. Sea Harriers can also be used for operational roles. This will suit INS Virat, as it can only carry Vertical/short take off and landing aircraft of size of the Sea Harriers. These can also be deployed across the border.

India's aircraft carriers :

> INS Vikrant (rt)
> INS Viraat - 32 Sea Harriers+ Ka-31 Helix-B+Sea King Mk.42B + Ka-28 Helix-A+Sea King Mk.42C
> INS Virkamadithya power projection carrier(to arrive from Russia in 2007/2008 after new refit)- 40 Mig-29K's + E-2C Hawkeye 2000 AWACS + mix of Ka-28 ASW helicopters and Ka-31 AEW helicopters + few HAL Dhruv/Sea King
> Indegenous carrier ADS (service in 2010): 16 Naval LCA combat aircrafts+ 10 HAL Dhruv + 2 Ka-31 AEW

PS : hopefully that poverty harping troll in the other forum wont dirupt thigns here

The P-8 is rubbish because;

a - it only has two engines

b - it is not a Nimrod.

I do of course merely jest. It is an excellent progrqamme, and a jet replacement for the P-3 is long overdue in my estimation.

Thats the only thing I don't like about the U.S military. It's aircraft and ships have service lifes longer than that of any other developed country.

The Nirod has been around a long time. It is based on the first jetliner ever to enter service.

true enough. Even though the longevity of the B-52 is astonishing, it will soon be beating the Canberra (in another three years or so as Canberra is now retiring). What is amazing about the Nimrod is that the prototype Comet flew for the first time in 1949 and yet the first prototype Nimrod MR/A4, a completely new version of the same basic airframe, flew in 2004!

Has any other type of aircraft still seen new variants being developed 56 years after it first flew?

The P-8 is nothing more than Boeing trash. The P-3 was and is the superior aircraft. Anyone who thinks a twin engine passenger airliner can fly low level is nuts. Hey Boeing how come you are not putting in MAD? Hey Boeing howcome there are short coming with launching sonobouys? Hey Boeing Park that passenger airliner at the air terminal and let passengers ride in it. We want the P-3. Look at the CP-140 program they went to LMAS for new wings for their P-3's It's cheaper that a 737 that can't do the job.....
