Capabilities of this sub is unknown however it is believed that two have been built and are under sea trials. It is a new generation of Chinese SSN designed to replace the 091 class SSNs.

Not new ships, but more of updates. In case war with Taiwan does occur, China will need everything to deter the Americans from interfering, and to a smaller extent, Japanese too.

On the topic of the sub, looks like any other Chinese sub for the most part to me. However, as with most of the ships and just weapons that the Chinese use in particular looks aren't always as they appear. We probably won't be able to get specs on it for quite some time.

Sorry about that, yes it was a mistake, it is a upgraded Type 091 Han class SSN, not a 093 class SSN. It was confirmed and the person who made the statement made a mistake on www.wforum.com/gbindex

Type 093/09 III is the new generation of SSN to replace the old Type 091 in the first decade of 21st century. Its main mission was speculated to hold against American CVBGs in the west Pacific. This sub has been under development for more than 10 years but encoutered certain technological bottlenecks in the early 90s particularly in the area of noise reduction measures and the new high temperature high efficiency nuclear powerplant. It was reported Russian assistance was sought to resolve those critical issues in the late 90s. As the result, Type 093 appears to show certain Russian influences such as a double hull design. It also features new bow and hull mounted sonars. Its noise level is further reduced by a new asymmetrical seven-blade skewed propeller and anechoic tiles. The displacement of Type 093 was estimated to be 6,000-7,000t dived. It is expected to be able to fire advanced wire-guided torpedos and launch anti-ship cruise missiles. Its overall combat capability was thought to be comparable to Russian Victor III class in the late 70s, but still representing a significant technological achievement when compared with its predecessor. The inital batch of 2 have been built. The first boat was launched between 2000-01 and has been undergoing sea trial since late 2002. A total number of 6-8 093 SSNs are projected.
