I will understand if there is some institutional groaning at the idea of my posting my song lyrics here, but there is a madness to my method.

A common complaint I have with popular music is the lyrics. Sometimes they're great, but oftentimes they are formulaic and bland.

Although the demands of being set to music can adversely affect their aesthetics when presented as plain text, I think the best song lyrics are poetry in their own right.

The purpose of this thread is to present some of my lyrics as poetry, rather than lyrics, and see how they fly on their own.

Some might, some certainly won't.

That said, I will endeavor to post links for any songs whose lyrics appear in this thread to the Majic After Dark thread.

However, I deliberately prefer not to post links to sound files here, because I want to present these as “poetry”.

Is it?

You decide.

My first offering is somewhat topical to ATS, in my opinion, and the message is one I firmly believe -- although I don't watch TV, and haven't had one in my house for over two years.

Between The Lines
Majic

At night I turn on my TV
The talking heads all talk at me
They show me what I'm supposed to see
And tell me how things ought to be.

But now and then I chance to spy
The smirk behind the camera eye
The truth behind the public lie
The falling of the sky...

Try to read between the lines
The secrets on the page
It's not too late to see the signs
To start your Golden Age.
Yeah.

I hear it on the radio
The news that we're supposed to know
All the bull the fat cats throw
To keep us in a row.

So what are we supposed to do
To know what's false and what is true?
The answer lies inside of you
If you only knew...

Try to read between the lines
The secrets on the page
It's not too late to see the signs
To start your Golden Age.

Try to read between the lines
And you'll become a sage
It's not too late to see the signs
It's time to leave the cage.
Yeah.

All I can say is WOW! Why have you been holding out on us? This "poem", at least, stands on it's own; no need for lyrics. Just like when you read lines from a song by Paul Simon or Bob Dylan, it's the "Words" that
make it what it is.

More!, Must have more....

Was that praise, shameless enough for you?

Unwrapping My Lyrics

Sure! You know I love it, even if it feels like a guilty pleasure.

As to why I've been “holding out”, that's mainly a function of my tendency to compartmentalize my online life.

It dawns on me that since I may actually want to do more than post these lyrics someday -- and would hate to have some lawyer tell me I can't -- I guess I should dutifully “tag” my lyrics as shown below.

If the staff see any issues with my copyright declarations, just let me know and we'll figure something out that hopefully won't mean pages of legalese. I can't edit the first post to add the blurb or I would, so let's pretend it applies.

But on with the lyrics.

The following bit of hip-hoppery was, as with all my songs, written a bit tongue-in-cheek, but as in the other cases, contains an underlying message I find intriguing.

This one was written for some friends on another BBS I hang out at -- and of course has a haibane element.

I deliberately chose long sequences of last-syllable rhymes to sort of force absurdity, but am frankly rather proud of what sense comes of the exercise.

Does this song have a profound message?

You decide.

Shia Haibane
Majic

MAJIC G:
Yo, yo listen up
I'm Majic G the sublime
Bustin' a rhyme bigtime on the climb
It's my time to shine like a dime
Lookin' fine at the scene of the crime
And I'm

Givin' a shout out stout
About the far-out hangout
Breakout checkout punch-out
Freakout throughout
Scout the route
Flameout pout the clout
Printout the readout
Outshout the devout
Without a doubt
Lookout

I say OLD! (OLD!)
I say HOME! (HOME!)
I say YO! (YO!)

CHORUS
My girl's a haibane
Her wings are charcoal gray
I watch her everyday
That's all I've got to say

MAJIC D:
I'm M-A-J-I-C
Word up to my homies
You're the only ones who ever really know me
That show me, gung-ho me
Info me, day-glo me
And throw me to grow me
Jean-Jacques Rousseau me

MAJIC G:
I came on the scene
Lookin' green and unclean
Had a need to intervene
You know what I mean
Who could have foreseen
In between the routine
When we convene it's the vaccine
For the unseen that made me mean

I say OLD! (OLD!)
I say HOME! (HOME!)

CHORUS
My girl's a haibane
Her wings are charcoal gray
I watch her everyday
That's all I've got to say

MAJIC G:
I say BREAK IT!

(Bass solo)

CHORUS OUT

FLAVAH FLAV:
(You better watch your step boyeee)
