Do you think we should have a spell check on the forums?

I have always wanted to have a spell check on here. I am a person who just sucks at spelling. I find myself always wondering how to spell a word or two. ...so I break out the word processor and check it in there. It is quite a memory eating way to do it (I run tons of things at the same time).

So I was thinking, how many of you people out there think we should have a spell check?

[Note: This has nothing to do with what will happen. I am just curious.]

It wouldn't matter to me either way, I always double check my posts for spelling as habit.

I do think it sounds like another lazy feature such as a remote control. If you dont know the spelling of a word and have to look it up, well then you just learned something. Then again, most people probably dont look words up so maybe a spellcheck would make posts easier to read.

That is kind of a problem I run into sometimes. I have sat looking at a post for 10 minutes trying to understand it. Spelling was off, usage was bad, and punctuation was bad.

I think it would be helpful to everyone if we did get one.

You know what that's actually not a bad idea. Im pretty good with spelling but a spell check wouldn't hurt. Unless it's too much trouble to set it up. Since William already has a lot to deal with running the board and stuff.

It's a great idea, and it would be helpful, but to what extent depends on the willingness of the "bad spellers" to use the spell checker. I'm sure there are tons of members who misspel just for the hell of it.....

Yes, you just made your point, Cammo, do you see which word?

Copy/paste your essay to Word and spellcheck it there.

A voluntary spellchecking system would be beneficial to the masses, however i wouldn't like it pressed on people.

To each, their own.

See what I mean? I notice the word I screwed up without having to put it in a spell check.

This most likely will never happen though. You know how busy William has been...

There are several WIBNI's that I would like to see on this forum (WIBNI = wouldn't it be nice if .... a term coined by a dear departed friend, a program manager I actually liked).
1. A spell checker for the postings would be great if the people will use it. Some of the spellings I have seen are horrible.
2. If it were possible I would like to see the U2U send page be opened with a full window for Internet Explorer or whatever. I would like to be able to copy to and paste from the Windows Clipboard.
3. The same thing could also be done for the Complain send box.
4. Also if some one has the time, perhaps the FAQ page could be updated to show the proper sequence to nest BB Codes. (How do you get bold red text, 4 high, in Impact Font?) When I did it for my signature, I had to play around with it.

However these are WIBNI's, items that it would be great if they could be done. I know that if there was a spell checker, I would definitely use it.

WIBNIs... How true.

On that BB code, you can't mix too many codes into a small area like that. Kind of sucks, but that's how it is...

(when we made the change to the new board, originally, we had not a little debate about BB -probably lurking in the archives somewhere: next to "Thomas's Guide to Liberal Democracy", I shouldn't wonder - one is stuck with the "fiddling", j-flieger; but your notion of a ready-made FAQ is an excellent one)
On spelling: I can see some virtue in TC's "do it in your WP first" suggestion, as it might encourage a little thought among the cerebrally-unorthodox.
That said, I shouldn't overestimate the importance of the odd slip or error (the deliberate offenders are instantly obvious as they make the mistakes that genuine people with spelling difficulties do not make: indeed, it is all too often a childishly nave attempt to focus attention on a post for which a Mind-Checker would be the only appropriate software.
And then, even Homer nods. while Estragon has almost godlike-status throughout the mystic Orient as Lord of Semi-Colons, Master of Orthography, the one thing he isn't -as he frequently points out to administrative staff -is a trained typist! Still a Mach 4 two-finger man after 20 years! Typo's will always occur for faster posters.
Then there is English v US spelling (that's why I always have MS checker off: I find it unbearably irritating that some goon in Seattle has the temerity to advise one of Her Majesty's subjects with regard to the correct spelling of "centre")
More seriously, "content" is the thing and a good post is good even with a few errors - be they of performance or competence.
The only occasions upon which I can recall ever having drawn attention to spelling is when an obvious criminal alights upon the board; or when a topic is plainly a surf-for-free nonsense: when I see a topic labelled "Nietsche", for example, I find it very hard to believe that anyone has anything to offer or exchange when he/she/it cannot even spell the name of the person he/she/it has made a Topic Title (happens all the time in Relig & Spit with names of obscure theologians/prophets/loonies: just taken from "Lists for Idiots dot com".)

Hmmmmm

I couldn't help but notice 3 spell checking Google ads next to the topic of spell checking being added to the forum.

Is that an automatic search ad system? I'm guessing it is. It would make the most sense, though I haven't really looked much until now.

Have I found a connection?

*EDIT*

The ads have just changed on refresh. I suppose that answers my question.

*EDIT*

They've just changed back to spelling on second refresh. LOL

Given the number of daily posts (always over 800, often over 1,000), spell check would be an excessive load on the server (each post requiring two additional page loads to process the spelling check).
