Can High amplitude high frequnecy Proton beam lasers be enough to make guns obsolete?

I think is can, but one think....Power. How will it get enough power in a small ecomonical case? A small round full of hydrogen ion gas and a battery pack(wow we are goign to need on hell of a battery!!) powering a niobium-Mo superconducting maget. What are your thoeries? Just crazy talk? Why?

The storage and steady power delivery are the problems that need to be worked through. I was digging through a bunch of requests for white papers, and the military desperately needs power sources. They've got a ton of nifty HE weapons, and nowhere near enough juice. There's a ship that utilizes a holistic approach to power generation, but that's the only dedicated HE generation weapons platform that I know of.

They've got some really, and I mean really, nifty toys. But they can't get them from the lab onto the battlefield.

I personally think plasma weapons are the next generation, and they might be easier to engineer in terms of power usage, in a one shot sense. It would remain a projectile weapon, but lethality, for a plasma 'bullet', would be much higher than a slug.

Energy weapons might never replace projectile weapons unless you need to bust through shields or something, Railguns seem to be the future of military weapons, civilians will probably continue to use firearms and possibly SOME energy based weaponry, i'm sure the military will use energy based weapons for special purposes, but I doubt projectile weapons will ever be phased out any time soon.

plasma can eat through solids especially tank armor let anlone human flesh.
