The problem with Ion drives though, is they take to long to speed up to be incredibly useful. Anyway thats the first I've heard of one being used for so long! The last one I heard that was tested only lasted for a total of 10seconds and that was in 1997.

There is a deep space probe with an ion engine on it right now, heading away from earth.

An Ion engine would indeed be good for a long distance space probe, due to the length and time frame of the journey it would have ample time to reach sufficient speeds.

The probe was actually called Deep Space 1 and was built to intercept comets.
