Not sure exactly what it is, ghost, or something else, but here's the story anyhow....
It happens mostly when one of us is alone in the house (I've experienced it, my girlfriend has, as well as a roomate we used to have...in fact, it
seemed to pick on her more often, hehe....) and usually early in the morning, or late at night, though it has happened in the day a couple of
times.
Basically, it's footsteps. Hard, deliberate footsteps, going up and down the staircase leading from our dining room to the upstairs hall. You can
be right at the staircase, and look up it, and you'll swear there is someone walking up and down the steps. It's really weird. And no, there is no
nearby source for the sound. I mean, it's really obvious that it's happening right there. The "entity" also loves to play with the light in the
staircase too, constantly dimming it, sometimes extinguishing it, even though the switch is still on. The electrics have been replaced, and it still
occurs. (Now, I'll be the first to admit that the lights could be a billion environmental things, but if you heard those footsteps, and the stairs
creak, you'd be a believer).
There doesn't seem to be any malice, and he (it just "feels" masculine) seems content to just make noise every once in a while, so we don't think
too much of it. Of course, the dog barks like crazy, and the cats pretty much run and hide every time it happens. The house was built in the 20's,
and I know there was a fire once that destroyed the upper floor. I keep meaning to research it sometime, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.
