The vote was 238-194, short of the two-thirds supermajority of 290 necessary to override a veto. The measure now goes to the Senate.

The House then overwhelmingly passed a Republican-backed proposal that would use federal money to study stem cells taken from adults and umbilical cord blood, instead of using human embryos.

The vote was 431-1. One Republican voted against the bill, which was supported by Bush.

Question here is what are peoples thoughts on this study?

My opinion, that its wrong only due to the fact it deals with killing human embryos. This goes right in there with the cloning idea......... I would say.

your $00.02 are welcome here please...........Source

Okay I understand why people are against embryonic stem cells, but I cannot figure out why they are opposed to cloning. The answers I usually get back are that it's unnatural, immoral or just plain creepy. I cannot for the life of me see any good reason to prohibit this technology, with controls of course. Like you cannot clone someone without their expressed concent etc. Anyway this technology WILL get to the point where we are cloning people, infact it is very close. The benefits will be enourmous but I'm sure there is some people out there that will disagree with me. *shrug* I guess when I need an organ replacement I'll be taking my business to places like Isreal, Japan and South Korea.

Disclaimer: I am opposed to the creation of brainless human husks for spare parts, it's unethical and unnessesary. We can clone spare parts on thier own in labs for animals, I see no reason to prohibit Therapudic Cloning within limits of course. As for Total Human Cloning, well as I said above it should be up to the person in question wether he/she wants another person that looks identical(but not acts) to the original.

I've read that there's been more success in using stem cells from adults than the ones taken from embryos. Stem cell research would be beneficial more than what we may realize today. What it will do for the medical industry will be analogous to what the laser has done for the electronics industry.

As for cloning, I'm all for it. There will be virtually no chance of transplant rejection when the body parts are genetically identical.

Mr. bush will veto the bill, he already has said so.

Big pharmaceuticals have too much money invested on keeping Americans hooked on miracle pills and remedies to allowed somebody to find cures for the illnesses that they are trying to protect so they can profit from American sick.

We in this country alone have more people addicted to prescription drugs compare to other countries, because is profitable.

Pharmaceuticals used tax payer money to research on new drugs to come around and sell them to the public at outrageous prices.

Finding cures for diseases will definitely affect pharmaceuticals.

It’s all about the benjamin baby.

Give me all the science in the world if it can save the life of a sick child or make his future a more productive and happy one.

I am not afraid of progress or science but I am afraid of what many will like to do in the name of religious believes.

If im not mistaken stem cells will cure ALOT of diseases . Why do not all of those diseases charity's combine their cash and put all of it towards stem cell research? Im sure we would get their alot faster.

just a question........

if these embryos have already been created enmass like this, well what ARE we going to do with them all? keep a potential lifeform in potential animation forever? Throw them into a garbage can like we are now? Hey, I know, we can suggest to those women who express interest in adoption that they should consider adopting an embryo instead!!

Is anyone else here willing to admit that we don't know what the heck we are doing? I mean, there is much more out there than we can just percieve. For all we know, there is a small spirit within that embryo, that if we destroyed the embryo will just go and find itself another suitable vessle to enter our world in and well, by keeping it in deepfreeze, we are keeping it in a uncomfortable state of limbo or something.

We don't know!!

but, I think the mistake has already been made. the mistake was making life that we didn't intend on allowing to continue on with it's developement, that mistake has been made. The embyos are there. To me, it just might be more harmful to keep them in deepfreeze forever than if we used them in a lab and used them to help cure these diseases.
