Discussion of council members- no self noms here please

I skimmed the original thread and saw a lot of good natured campaigning, but I'd like to have a thread dedicated strictly to members who would like to make the case for their nominees of choice- other than themselves.

I don't have opinions on all of the positions, but there are a few I would like to present for your consideration- and remember, with turnout this low so far, voting really does count! If you know somebody who will do right by us, bring them up and get them nominated!

The DISC and "at large" positions are two that I have fairly strong opinions on.
I strongly recommend GradyPhilpott for DISC. I haven't always agreed with him, but he's intelligent, aware, and active in most of the threads where I have encountered him. I think he'd be a valuable voice and would have a very low drama factor. He's also a Marine- not that it's incredibly relevant but you gotta love Marines. His opponents are a bunch of draft-dodging girly men. lol


I would suggest Off_the_Street for "at large". Another mature, intelligent, low drama nomination. According to his avatars he has both an AK-47 and a guitar- two very important tools for influencing people.


In general I strongly urge members to get interested, consider the most intelligent and responsible members they know, and make nominations. Don't just take somebody you agree with- pick somebody with the maturity to do right for us. And of course, please contribute your opinions to this thread and let's try to get a feel for who we want so that we can make this experiment work sans drama.

Closing note: DO NOT discuss your own qualifications here for the love of Pete. I'm begging.

Very good post and I couldn't agree with more....this should not be a situation where you nominate those that are close to you, or your "good ol pal/buddy"...they should be chosen on knowledge of the forum you are nominating them for, responsibility, and reliability!

I think this is a good idea. I just became a member today, but I have been reading everyone's writings for months now. So maybe my perspective can be a value. This is how I voted.

X OnlyinmyDreams because he seems pretty dedicated to a lot of the topics and he always posts researched posts.

G Simulacra This was a hard decision, but ultimately I went with Simulacra for his activity. There are many good posters in this genre.

ATSNN nerdling because he has been involved for as long as I have been reading, I enjoy his articles, and he seems very motivated to represent this part of ATS.

DISC manager TheRiverGoddess because I like her thought process. I don't understand DISC all that much.

BTS dgtempe because she has fun over there.

PTS name withheld because I don't like politics. I'll keep that one to myself.

ATS at large SpittinCobra because I have watched this member always welcome members and just get around a good portion of the board.

I thought Mirthful Me would be a good choice for DISC. He's mature and intelligent.

ATS at large? I would've picked Asala.

It was my understanding that we shouldn't pick mods. I thought Mirthful Me was a good choice for DISC too, although, I'm not sure how those not in DISC, like myself, are qualified to vote since we do not know the member's participation there.

We have a pair of heavy-weight endorsements for Mirthful Me, and I agree with them. I don't see mirtful around all the time so the name just didn't occur to me at first.


How about some serious discussion of a coordinated effort to put Mirthful Me on DISC?
(I still stand by Grady as being a bright and active contributor who should be considered for some position if he has any interest in serving one.) Does anyone who knows Grady fairly well have any recommendation for where else he may fit? I'm thinking ATSNN.

I think GradyPhilpott's good to go.....he's always in the game and seems to have a good head on his shoulder.

Edsinger too.....he's always on and seems to be mature and presents his arguements well.

I also like the thought of Grady for the at large position. His contributions whether you agree with them or not are always a must read.

Simulacra would be outstanding in the PTS position.

...and Nerdling - as far as I'm concerned you are really the only choice for ATSNN. You have established yourself time and time again as the heart and soul of the forum.

This postion is designed to be a sort of helper for general questions so they should be very patient and good with new folks, right? I would like to see some more females discussed in this thread. Hmm... I'm thinking of Worldwatcher, Bleys and a couple others but I think they may already be Mods. Heck, I don't even know who wants the job.

I never pay attention to this stuff. I need to be a better citizen!

It is done by annonymous form, but what I am trying to do is to create a discussion to enhance interest and allow people to make the case for people who they feel others should give consideration to before casting their votes.

Let me give my nod to Nerdling, I certainly meant no slight to him by not naming him for ATSNN.

I've don't personally think too much of Edsinger to be honest. Maybe I just haven't seen him at his best, but my encounters with him just haven't been very impressive. That's just me talking though- I'm not trying to shut him down, just throwing my two pennies in.


So we're facing kind of a tough choice here because we've got several well qualified people being discussed for the big spots- ATSNN, DISC, and At Large.

I think I'd have to stand by Mirthful Me for DISC.

Grady is plenty qualified for At Large, so I wouldn't mind seeing him there in order go open up the ATSNN spot to Nerdling.


PTS is a really tricky position to name. EVERYONE is somewhat biased. We're going to need some one of INCREDIBLE maturity for this post who will really go in there and fight to bring activity and fairness without seeing it as a position to advance partisan viewpoints. I am not familiar enough with anyone to know to a certainty that they are right for that job. I would tend to shy away from people who devote a lot of energy to the hot topics of politics (like the war on terror) for that one. I'd be looking for somebody with a very analytical mind- somebody who understands government and politics and simply delights in the topic itself. Does anyone know such a member?

Nerdling for ATSNN, marg and MaskedAvatar for something, and I forget the rest. It got kind of frustrating, so many good folks, but so few positions. In the end I just did a lightning elimination round and pressed 'submit'. I guess if you don't vote, you can't complain, but I voted. I've read some other posts about nominations, and some of the names thrown around are asinine. Some clearly unqualified people are getting nominated. It's kind of weirding me out.

I think this thread is a good idea. It brings to mind several people that I did not remember to consider when I voted.

In my opinion all of the following are good choices: Off_the_Street, Grady, OnlyinmyDreams, Simulacra, Mirthful Me, Edsinger, and Nerdling.

Also, how about Lady V and Flyers Fan?

It will be interesting to see the results of this new policy.

Please for the love of Pete don't discuss his qaulifications! We all know what Skeptic Overlord wants done will be done, regardless of members, staff, or some newly founded garbage council. Maybe not all the most prolific posters. Maybe some of them have agendas. But they all have some #ing credibility. Marg? Don't vote for her, I've honestly had her drivel on ignore for #ing months (and I don't like to say that but this is how it has to come about, because of this bull# voting!!). Please! I love Sminkey and Ace's posts, even if they piss me off! Don't pull the usual message board bull# and go for the every thread posting people. Man, I think this whole idea of a council is bull#...but give the people that deserve to do it their just desserts!

These people are intelligent - and are looking for the truth. Not some party friggin line. I believe that. Even if I dislike their politics. Plus none of the people actively seem like they wish to be "staff".

Which means they'll do a better job than anyone that does.

Wake up a little UP TIGHT last night?! Think what you will but don't attempt an "Authoritative" stance on issues you are utterly CLUELESS about mate.

We, who thought up the Council idea are in NO WAY interested in it being another version of ourselves!

The input form these folks will be expected, will be heard and will be a part of the operational activity of ATS going forward.

On a side note, let's keep the name calling and derogatory commentary out of a civil issue thread okay?

To me, she is the empitome of the on-line particiant. (spell-check needed and all)

I'm campaigning now? I'm unelectable. I piss too many people off. I don't refrain from campaigning because I don't want the job- I do. I refrain from campaigning because I'd get humiliated in the election.


More importantly I really strongly suggest that we come to a general agreement on which positions to give the most popular nominees (like Grady, Nerdling, and Mirthful Me) and start campaigning for these people to get the newer members who don't really know the candidates to vote in some sort of organized fashion
