Can you identify this medal?

My mother-in-law was cleaning out her house and found a medal that her father had brought back from WWII. She asked me if I knew what it is, and I had no clue. All she knows is that her father was in the service and served in the war.

If anyone knows what this is, please let me know.

Uhh what side was he on? Did he loot that off of a P.O.W? I guess you wouldn't know that maybe he found it. I would be very unsettled to find out one of my family members was in possesion of that medal, I would always wonder how they got it.
