I am sure that these are Veterans from Korean War.

I saw the documenatry where a guy visited DMZ between North and South Korea. And these soldiers from North and South stand there all day, staring at each other across the Border. All day.

And they both keep an eye on each other all the time.

And they stand in the Houses that represent the border of the 38 parallel.

Inside the main building where North-South and North-UN discussions are held.

Crazy!

And they dont look happy either standing there all day.

And when people take photos, the South Korea soldiers immediatly come to check things out.

Wouldnt want these two guys appearing on my window all of the sudden, if you know what I mean!

The South Koreans stand for about 30 minutes at a time in the "RoK Ready" positions. Then change over for another 30 Minutes....or maybe it's three hours....it's three something.

Yeah thats pretty cool I think...the bulding is owned by the swiss or the swedes or something like that.

Only one side can occupy the building at one time. When I was there some North Korean soldiers were giving me the finger at the window and simulating cutting thier thraot with thier finger....I just looked at them with a very confused face and pointed as me and my friend laughed it off.

Don't U.S. soldiers also stand like that in some parts of the border?

I read somewhere U.S. soldiers who stand and face the N. Koreans at the border cant be under 6 feet and under a certain weight because the need to intimidate the other side. They apparently take this very seriously! And the N. Koreans must give out medals like candy.

Or maybe they just have Bigger Medals then the Western Soldiers!

You know it was always nice when the USA launched a Big Bad Airplane or a Big Bad Submarine - and Russians immediatly had to build a Bigger Bad Airplane or a Bigger Badder Submarine.

Its maybe this way with medals also.

I counted about 37 medals on the first guy from the right, and that's quite a lot of medals fre one guy let alone all 9+ of them.

I suspect having to live in North Korea has something to do with it.

Well said!! The DMZ is all about who's weewee is bigger.
The original building built by SK was big, so what did NK do...
They built a bigger one.

A few years ago (I Think 3-5 yrs back) SK built a brand new building....and it was bigger. So NK added like 2 or 3 floors on to thier building so it would be bigger.

Typical male ego's

No...only the S.Koreans do. The Army administers tours and maintains alot of our equipment there and of course most of them work on whatever base they are on. As for as standing at the PAO at the DMZ...they do not.

Yup, the S.Korean guards have to be atleast 6 feet, which is hard to find in korea

And they do not wear coats in the winter...not even raincoats (that is for the few U.S. troops at the DMZ also). The S.Koreans wear sun glasses at all times...so if they start to get sleepy and nod off it won't show.

Did you notice that they all seem to have the exact same medals? Not to mention the fact that none of them look old enough to have fought in the Korean war, unless Koreans just don't age to visibly. It's just cookie-cutter medals.
EDIT: Actually I just noticed that while they all have most of the same medals, not all of them have the blue one up top, and the guy on the right has 6 more than the others. Maybe rank-based or command-based medals that most people have, but not all quite identical?

[ tangent rant ]
We do it too, but not on such a grand scale. I was awarded the National Service Ribbon while I was still in boot. I didn't even want to wear the damned thing. I hadn't done anything for it! The army is even worse- they have a boot camp ribbon. At present all soldiers graduate boot with 2 or 3 ribbons if I understand correctly, and all marines graduate with 1, if you don't count the rifle expert badge (well, they don't all get the rifle expert badge, but any idiot can earn it, so I can't figure out why not.)

I don't particularly like medals. You can't wear what you are on your shirt. You're a good soldier or you're not, and anyone worth his salt can tell the difference without looking at your chest. I always figured if they really wanted to give me a reward that fixing the crap they call chow would be a good start.

Maybe the flags represent all of the UN nations enforcing the border or being involved in the DMZ.

The flags are for all the countries that have had official representation in the blue houses. Such as an ambassador or maybe a senator or something.....I doubt a Head of state would ever wanna go there.

1. The guys are being honored for their work in the NK medals factory.

2. Kim Jung Il is a huge Michael Jackson fan, and the boys are showing their support for Jacko by copying his fashion sense.

3. They plan to bum-rush airport security, hoping the guards will just wave them through.

4. They finally got their shipment of Ronco (TM) "studding magic" kits.

5. With millions starving, their leader becoming an international pariah, and their economy retreating to the stone age, North Koreans have no real reason for self-esteem, and this is the best substitute they could come up with.

You decide.

Question...

Why haven't you infiltrated North Korea and started liberating it yet?
You really seem to hate them that much, why not liberate them?

Supposedly the North Korean DMZ guards are the best fed in all of the North Korean military (excluding the highly loyal special forces). Yet they still look slightly frail and wary.

I wonder how many people you have to beat up to get all those merit badges?
