For ages, science fiction authors have written about placing humans in suspended animation for long space voyages. New research done at The University of Washington, has recently demonstrated placing mice into a state of 'Near hibernation.' This is the first time mammals have been caused to enter such a state and there is great potential for new medical discoveries including treating Cancer.

Mice have been placed in a state of near suspended animation, raising the possibility that hibernation could one day be induced in humans.

If so, it might be possible to put astronauts into hibernation-like states for long-haul space flights - as often depicted in science fiction films.

In this case, suspended animation means the reversible cessation of all visible life processes in an organism.

Lead investigator Dr Mark Roth said this might ultimately lead to new ways of treating cancer, and preventing injury and death from insufficient blood supply to organs and tissues.

If humans could be freed from their dependence on oxygen, it could buy time for critically ill patients on organ-transplant lists and in operating rooms, said Dr Roth.

A voyage to Arcturis may someday be passed in the deep sleep of Space Travel. Cancer patients may awaken someday to a cured and healthy life years in the future. Genius lives may be saved to guide us as we step forward into infinity.

Hibernation, enjoyed by bears in the deep of winter may someday be in the realm of mankind. How will we choose to use this technology? Will our deep slumber be of our own choice? Will propaganda and advertisement (the same thing in my book) be ever present or will we be able to enjoy a well deserved rest on our way to tomorrow? This fascinating potential deserves a closer look and intelligent discussion. Once possible, as I am certain it one day will indeed be, where do we go from there?

For whatever reason human hibernation reminds me of the movie "Rocket Man." What a dumb movie that was.

yes all these things sound good at the start

but lets face it once a goverment gets hold of this
technology it'll be freeze imigrants till theyre proccesed
dont have a job pop him in cryo for a while and save on
benifit payments
it will end up being a freeze and forget society

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

ps sorry for the spelling :-)lol

Perhaps this is the way of the future. This technology could be put to good use. Lets us not allow it to be used for evil. It is up to us.

if it is becomeing a possibility. then we need to set up constitutional laws to stop it from being used against an individuals wishes. it can be used for great causes, but it can also be severly abused as others have noted. if it is even a possibility it is time to start to regulate how such a thing can be used.

Exactly, the key is to ensure there are laws to protect the innocent. It REALLY is up to us.

Demolition Man

Of course, hibernating some of this extra weight off sounds like a good idea. ;-)

Ok, I have a bit of a problem with this...

Say I get an incurable disease and am told that I will die in six months, but I have the option of going into "hibernation" until a cure is found.

So, I go into hibernation....for, say, a thousand years.

The year is 3005, and they wake me up. Ten generations have gone by, but within these generations have been changes to the human race that have not been changed in me because my body was around in 2005. So, what people in the future are immune to, I may not be.

That, and something like this would be for the elite and those who want to be or want to remain powerful. And it would probably cost a mint to have it done as well.

I wouldn't worry about that, their not going to keep you alive more than a maximum of 20 years, the shock to the system would be to much after that. depending on the availability of it.
