I remember an ice storm once as a kid living in MI. Ice was about 3" thick and smooth as glass. Power was out all over from the weight of the ice. We played hockey on the street...and for several days even. I'll never forget how the daytime sun would warm the top part of the ice. Then, it would re-freeze again in the evening, and it was resurfaced better than any Zamboni could do. Nobody could drive anywhere because it was too slick, so we had all the streets in the whole neighborhood to ourselves. World's largest hockey and skating rink. Parents were hating it, but all us kids were loving it. I remember ice skating to my friend's house, and he lived about a mile away.

You know what? I think it might actually have been 1976, now that you mention it!! That sounds about exactly right!
I just remember going outside and looking at the street. The ice was perfectly clear, you could see right through it to the concrete underneath like a sheet of really thick glass. We'd scar it all up playing hockey on it all day, but the next day it would be good as new and perfectly flat.
edit - I was actually thinking it was '75, but you're probably right.

When I was a baby here in the UK, the sea froze, not that I remember it.
We used to have proper winters with feet of snow.
Not so much now, except up north. But it's always been grim up north....

A severe winter storm, called the "heaviest snowfall in a decade," has left the central United States in tatters.
The storm has caused nearly 200 flight cancelations at St. Louis Lambert International Airport and blanketed major roads in Kansas, Nebraska, and Indiana with ice and snow.
The National Guard has been called to help motorists stuck in blizzard conditions.
