If you watch U-toob, or some other video source, do you like "Shorts", or do you like full length (long) videos?

When you see a post here on ATS, do you like 15-20 word, 4-5 sentence posts...or do you like long, multi-paragraph, in-depth, posts?

Do you like reading the book, or watching the movie about the book?

I could write five more paragraphs here, but I think I'll stop now.

How long is your attention span?

Like both long videos and the shorts. The shorts are good for a distraction when I need a break from everything.

My attention span is pretty long. I can sit down and open up a novel and read through it without stopping, even if it takes all day and all night. I've been known to read 20 hours without stopping. Not uncommon for me to read 4 hours without stop recently. Sometimes I read 8 hours, but it seems the older I get the faster I get exhausted when I'm studying, especially the Bible. Cheap novels are an easy read though. I guess that's why I know so much about the Bible I've studied it every day for probably 30 years and done a lot of research most people wouldn't imagine. The saying is literally true, I've probably forgot more about the Bible that you ever knew about it. And I really shouldn't say this, but I've never met another person, online or in person, who has ever had more knowledge about the Bible than me. Most people don't know that, and I like it that way. I've learned that showing knowledge just angers people. They like it when you're dumb and they can teach you what they know. Especially if they're older. They can get their ego hurt real easy if you correct them over and over. Best let them be wrong and act like you don't know what they're talking about. Makes them happy and my life easier.

I both like and hate some long and short videos and written works.

Depending on the subject and the presenter, 15 seconds or two sentences might be too long and an hour or many paragraphs may be too sort. I do find the AI made stuff on YouTube to be ridiculous almost always. Bad facts or interpretations of events and such.

I can watch someone pour plastic resin then finish it just to see how it is done and how it turns out. I often watch techical videos. There is a guy restoring a tube based computer from the 1950s I find entertaining.

It is not so much how long it is as much as personal interest and how well it is done in an informative and entertaining way.

What I really hate is something like the newest Planet of the Apes movie. Great story and great movie if you cut off the last 15 seconds. They totally ruin the story with inept technical writing that kills the whole premise of the movie from the start. Then again, some videos just have voiceovers or presenters that have a voice better for photography than video.

I like the shorts as these give tasters. IE. It can arouse your curiosity to dig deeper on the subject. This is what I love about the internet, these little snippets of information that can take you to places that you would never dream of going.

Hate the shorts on youtube (because they clog up the search results and I'm never interested, so easy to make a filter excluding shorts but youtube won't do it).

When it comes to short vs long comments on ATS, it depends on the content. I guess for many others as well, cause I've noticed when people are complaining about my comments being too long, they usually don't like the content whereas they don't complain about comments of equal length where they don't have any issues with the content (or agree). Short comments usually don't have much interesting to say but then again, they're quick to read.

I prefer movies for the visuals and the audio (in particular the music that accompanies scenes). Although the book is always more complete and if its an older book it hasn't been adapted for "modern audiences", so that's a plus. Nevertheless, I still usually prefer the movie (and not once have any of my favorite books been turned into a movie; even though David Eddings' fantasy epics are perfect candidates for an alternative to Lord of the Rings).

My attention span also depends on my interests and preferences.

I'm old school.

I want as much information as you can possibly give me, if I am reading or watching. From the few I have watched; I don't really understand the point of the "shorts".
Seems like nobody wants facts. Just entertainment.

I just get annoyed at short articles, videos, ect.

it depends on the topic. But mostly longer videos in which I learn something new or where something is explained. Here on ATS I like the longer posts, but the shorter ones can also say a lot.

I have read so many books that I no longer read because I enjoy reading novels or stories, I can no longer find any new formulations - in my language - so literature doesn't really appeal to me at the moment. That's why I mainly read specialist literature.

My attention span can be very short if there is nothing and I'm just browsing, if there is something to do then I keep at it. I think most people just don't have enough work - or the wrong kind - which is why their attention span is always browsing and rarely focused.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment in your thread...I be try hard to act in a civil and respectful manner...(I know...I know...)

Many of you may not know this...However...I'm a poet...as in...I write poetry...with many examples of my work included here in the short story forum...

The reason I bring this into the conversation...is that poetry is a story...created in a very concise and limited format...yet...(hopefully)...conveying the entire premise of the poets intent in that short format.

Sometimes a short u-tube video manages to accomplish the same principle...other times not so much...

I do prefer the long u-tube videos...yet feel that the short ones do have their place...especially when you consider that the..."story"...they exemplify...really only needs that shorter format to accomplish it's intent...

Imma be a fence sitter on this question...and hopefully not gain too many splinters in the nether regions...

Long! Always long! I even don't like YouTube because most things are too short on there. I only came to this realization when I stopped watching episodes of Unsolved Mysteries [the original with Robert Stack] in the mornings before work. I had noticed my attention span seemed shorter and so I switched to watching full length movies in the morning and I have noticed a BIG difference in my attention span since.

I REALLY enjoy reading so I don't like when a post has an interesting title but then only like 4 or 5 lines of text and a link. No offense to anyone at all, but that's kinda lame to me. But I know not everyone has time to make long posts.

It's not a question of attention span. Not all content is created equal.

But U-toob DOES have a filter to see only videos (and exclude shorts). It's right at the top of the page of search results. You have the option of "All", "Shorts", "Videos", "Unwatched", "Watched" along with (7) other criteria including setting up a custom filter.

In fact, this feature was partly why I wrote the OP; I was curious how many people picked "shorts" as a filter selection? It shows up first, like it is the most popular, and I just wondered.

On ats I perfect short to the point information. On YouTube I like the 2-3 hour long deep dives.

2-3 hours? Wow! I draw the line at about 40 minutes, personally, but okay.

There are lots of good stuff in there old talks by the likes of Allen Watts and others. I put In ear buds and usually just listen to most content. Lots of content creators do game lore deep dives about the souls games or warhammer or dungeons and dragons and I just put that kind of stuff on while I work or tinker or paint.

I find that for some reason I cannot focus on a task unless I have a podcast or speech or audiobook going. It’s like I need this extra stimulation in order to drowned out my excess thoughts sad distractions and just focus on what’s in front of me. It’s almost like my brain listens while my body works. I am not sitting down and watching YouTube for 2-3 hours straight. As you say I don’t have the attention span.
