No, there isn't any other evidence to the best of my knowledge. But this just further reinforces my point above. Why would Russia suggest the guy was a mercenary if there wasn't some political value / capital in it? They wouldn't, right?

This one guy (and others like him) don't think about these things at all when they sign up. All they're thinking about is blood-lust and greed for their own personal gain. They don't care if their home country gets dragged into some international dispute over it. In fact, they likely think this is some sort of a safety net of some kind if they do in fact get captured. It's double BS, and it should be punished heavily.

But hey, it's Australia, and knowing their woke policies, they'll probably give the guy a medal and pay millions to the Russian government for his release, after apologizing to the world...which is exactly what Russia wants.

So, further to the "Why?" question.

Australia has provided 1.5 billion in support to Ukraine already. I doubt one guy fighting for Ukraine in his own accord makes much difference in Russian/Australian relations.

Well he's a 32 year old man, so thankfully we won't have to read left wing media crying like he's a vulnerable child who didn't understand the the risk he took.

I'll fight and die to defend my own country, but private mercenary in a foreign land, definitely not.

That’s coming up. Biden’s administration is pushing Ukraine to draft 18yr olds to help with manpower shortages.

US urges Ukraine to draft 18-year-olds to solve manpower shortages on the battlefield

The current minimum conscription age is 25, but an anonymous US administration official told reporters on Wednesday that reducing it would help Ukraine keep up with Russia's military.

"The simple truth is that Ukraine is not currently mobilizing or training enough soldiers to replace their battlefield loses while keeping pace with Russia’s growing military.

So same age Russia already drafts people.

Did you read the article?

It’s showing that Ukraine is getting desperate because of man shortages compared to Russia’s growing military.

As seen on the maps.

Eastern frontlines and key sectors have been collapsing while the Kursk “PR stunt” incursion is getting grounded down to a walnut.

Trump knows this. We all know this.

It’s time to start pulling the plug and save as many lives as possible here before Ukraine starts arming children towards Kiev like Germany did in its last days in WW2.

You have been posting about how Ukraine for how long now? Strange that it's Russia that has the lower conscription age, had to mass release prisoners, and now using regular military troops of another country. Those don't seem like the actions of a country whose plan is working.

Wow! Talk about some twisted logic. So let's say your kid decided to go do the same thing, and got captured. Following his capture the Russians sent you a video clip of him being tortured and demanded money for his release. Would you still feel the same way then? OR...would you feel like you wanted to go wage war on Russia and kill those who tortured him? OR...would you just write your kid off and say..."Well, it was his choice, so whatever!"

Because that's essentially what is going on here. The Russians are using this person as political capital to gain leverage on foreign countries, much the same as they would be doing by using your kid to gain leverage over you (in the analogy above).

My logic is twisted when you want to prosecute the guy?

Russia only gets the political capital the west gives it Australia is already firmly opposing Russia's invasion. It's inlikely to change it policy based on a few people volunteering to fight for Ukraine.

Again, Wow! So having Australia pay another few million, this time to the Russians, to gain his release shouldn't matter then, right...according to your logic?

And what happens when they don't pay the money (as they shouldn't)? What happens when the public outcry from Australian citizens and families of this idiot go unheard? Then it will be the Australian government's fault for 'not doing anything about it'. They didn't create the situation, but now all of a sudden they're responsible for getting this idiot out of the situation he created for himself.

Look, I get the whole personal freedoms angle you're suggesting here, and that's all fine and good. BUT, when those personal freedoms start to affect the actions of a government, or other people (i.e. taxpayers), then those actions should have repercussions on the individual who created the situation.

I think Russia should treat him correctly, they probably won't but that is just another example of why we should be supporting Ukraine against Putin.

As already stated Russia has used mercenary troops and foreign fighters thought this conflict . Their hypocracy in complaining about foreign fighters who have volunteered for Ukraine should be obvious.

You didn't say that, and I'm not saying you did. All I'm saying is why else would Russia pubicize this other than to create an international incident...which will more than likely translate into some sort of a ransom deal (whether it's money, or a prisoner exchange, or some other concession). I just used a monetary ransom as my example. So, you did not say it...I did.

I think Russia should treat him correctly, they probably won't but that is just another example of why we should be supporting Ukraine against Putin.

I agree, but like you I'm pretty sure he won't get treated very well at all. In fact, if history is any guide, mercenaries are usually given pretty brutal treatment including slavery as they are perceived for what they are...soldiers for hire. Most governments look far more dimly on these types than they do simple conscripts from the enemy country.

However, I think this is more reason not to support anything associated with this conflict. The whole thing is politicized, especially Ukraine's posturing with the world media. If Zelensky can survive killing off all of his countrymen (and women) then that's on him. The rest of the world getting involved and starting WW3 isn't going to solve anything.

As already stated Russia has used mercenary troops and foreign fighters thought this conflict . Their hypocracy in complaining about foreign fighters who have volunteered for Ukraine should be obvious.

Just like Ukraine, Russia and all their antics should also be ignored. If Putin can survive killing off all of his countrymen (and women) then that's on him, just like Zelensky. If other countries like the Norks are willing to go fight for him, well, too bad for them when they die.

It's really not that hard.

edit - And when I say "survive" related to Putin and Zelensky, what I mean is both literally and metaphorically (i.e. remain in power).

If yes, doesn’t that look like Russia’s plan is working then?

Also Trump blamed North Korea being there because the Biden administration approved Ukraine to use long range weapons in Russia.

Then Russia launched the new Oreshnik missile. Which proves that Russia can launch a missile going over Mach 11 and flatten Kiev etc if it really wants to and other military targets any time it wants if things get really out of hand.

Again, January 20th can’t come soon enough. Because the Biden administration lost big-ly here.

Ukraine is so active in world media as it is fighting of invasion from a much larger and more powerful neighbour and needs international support.

This isn't a conflict that Ukraine or Zelensky choose to have, the deaths are 100 % on the Russian government.

I assume you wouldn't be ok with your country being invaded so why do you think Ukraine should be any different?

Russia is almost 3 years into a war of it's own making that has caused tens of thousands of deaths, hundreds of thousands of injuries and resulted in it's economic and political isolation. It's border with NATO has increased massively and it's military and equipment have been shown to be massively over rated.

In return it has gained a small amount of land, not something it was exactly short of.

Some plan.

ETA oh and thanks your quoted text shows I didn't say they had equal manpower. You did make that up.

From his outbursts on social media, he may be educated, though is dumb not considering the possibility of being caught.

Maybe he had a sheltered upbringing, and did this to rebel, and vent his hatred of possibly his family by killing Russian soldiers.

probably thinks there will be no repercussions by law, as it is acceptable to kill Russians by the way that Russia is portrayed in the media.

Well that didn’t go to plan then.

Though there’s strange stuff afoot in Australia, such as bring home the remainder of the Bali nine drug smugglers, and now they have arrived back into Australia they have been released into the community and their sentences have been quashed.

Really this is woke gone nuts. If you do the wrong thing suffer the consequences.

Woke discipline is crap, it’s you did the wrong think all is forgiven, on yer way.

No winder why we have a youth crime crisis in Australia, kids know they will get away with criminal acts.

Perhaps this pilot disclosed technical details of allied forces aircraft to the Chinese, such as airframe limitations, g force data, avionics fitted to allied aircraft.

This info would be invaluable to the Chinese knowing opponents limitations. And engineering something in thei eyes better, to outplay their opponents.

He may have revealed details of the f35 the f22.
As far as I know they have sensitivities that a foreign power may know.

He may be suspected of treason.
