Happy Thanksgiving to all of US!!!!!!

Been outside of America since '85 so no big dinner but we are driving from London To Exeter to the Christmas faire and have tickets for the Exeter cathedral for sing song Christmas carols.

But this is the day I taught my girls to calmly sit down and consider what we have to be thankful for. I am thankful for My Lady of 10 years who gets me and You Guys! Thank you for being there as a light in this sometimes dark world....

Not being an Azz or anything....but can someone explain what this Thanksgiving business actually is, that you USAnians are obsessed about?
We hear it and see it all the time on your pop culture....a good explanation would be nice.
I think South Park did a version....the Canucks always poke the southerners.
I remember an English historical program explaining the event as some celebration of a bunch of British/English arrivals to the North American Lands, and couldn't feed themselves in a strange place, were starving, then some Indians taught them how to grow/cook/eat corn and how to hunt local turkeys...then they talked the English into killing a rival tribe of Indians, then they had a celebration and party...eat, drank, swapped wives...all that....and the legend was born. Or something like that anyway.

This, "Thanksgiving" stuff has alway been a source of intrigue to us ...other Anglos, Euros etc....like a strange secret sauce ritual you all seem to partake in.....?
Do the blacks and browns and Indians also do this ritual with you all?

Serious question...probably asked a million times by non USAnians.
Good excuse for a Piss-up I guess.....weird beginnings though.
Have at it my Yankee cousins.

The short answer is a Harvest festival, nothing more nothing less.

Blessed to be at work today, keeping the wheels of commerce from falling of the wagon.

Thanks for the explanation.

So its either a European Pagan celebration....or nobody knows.

Cool. Question answered. Thankyou.

Long answer is settlers and Native Americans dining together, festivities etc.

Folks know, the explanation is out there. It just depends on the version you want to ascribe to. That's where it gets into the sticky wickets.
Harvest fest is where I can go simply. Obviously there is a greater nuance for what it has become.
