Right, just now, about 2 min ago, a jet flew over our area, which is a small town in the Fenlands UK.
Apart from being 20:00h what can I say, they are always flying around at dumb times.
Now, before I go on, I have a stupid phobia, but i's real. I am scared that a plane will fall on me. It stems from many, many dreams in which this exact thing has happened.
I'm saying this because I listen to jets or planes flying over our heads, in case they make noises of engine failures etc. Yes, I even calculate trajectories to see if it could hit or not...So I know what they all sound like, is what I'm getting at.

This just now, has me actually a little bit weirded out. I try and describe the noise that both my husband and I heard.

Imagine a normal RAF jet as the base noise. Then, about every 5 seconds there was a second noise which literally sounded like a slowed down laser or water drop. Piiouuuu like a 'wet' noise but slow this word Piii- ooo- uuu over I'd say 5 seconds lasting, from the highest starting noise to the lowest end part.

I got the chits, because at first I thought that thing was falling down, then starting up again, but the normal background growl never changed. Then my husband said that they are doing pirouettes over our house but changed is mind and said that's not what they are doing at all, what is this chit?

After that it lasted for another 7 or so 'rounds' and then both [noises] were to far away.

I hope people are reading this careful description and I need to repeat that it wasn't at all the noise a spiralling plane makes, maybe in pitch shift, but not in clarity or note [this one started with a much, much higher note].

If nobody comes up with a new jet concept or anything, I have to say it was weird enough for me to think it was a) a laser fight or b) a flaming UFO being chased by a jet. And I think those are ridiculous answers, but that is exactly what it sounded like.

Heeelp!!!

The noise could have something to do with atmospheric conditions distorting the jets' normal engine sounds.

You have Lakenheath in the area US biggest airbase in Europe and RAF Wittering for pilot training. So my thoughts are either the Yanks are testing out their latest drone, or Wittering are doing some night flight practice.

It's a turbine engine spooling down after they throttle back and drop out of cruise power. Nothing abnormal at all; happens all the time on final descent into an aerodrome. I know the exact sound you are referring to. When you hear it often depends on which direction the wind is blowing and the aircraft's orientation with respect to your location when they perform this throttle back maneuver. Also depends on the approach procedure in effect for that day and time, and the amount of traffic in the 'stack'. Sometimes you'll get directed down lower further out, and other times it can be closer to the airfield.

Oh, and regarding your fear of an aircraft falling on you...you've got a way better chances of being hit by a bus and being struck by lightning at the exact same time. So, no real worry there either.

edit - And, if you go over to the nearest airport and stand off the end of the runway they're landing on, you'll hear them spool back up again just before landing, and you'll hear the throttle adjustments up and down to stay on the glideslope right up to the flare before landing.

Yes, I'm sure it's a kind of training, we live 'near' RAF Mildenhall. I am not bothered about that as we are used to that. What I wanted to know was what the noise was I heard.

And if these are atmospheric conditions, why have I only heard them today? We lived here for over 16 years.
Maybe it's new, today only conditions, but how can they make the jet noise sound normal yet have an ADDED noise which sounds like described in my OP?

SO far none of the possibilities fit what we heard, but please keep trying [!] and if unsure, please read my description of the noise, it is very detailed and might give some clues.

Ah, now that is an explanation that makes sense.
Why have we only heard this noise today?

As to my phobia, sorry I know intellectually the chances of happening is slim, but if you have had my dream you'd be weary too. It started many years ago and it crops up every now and then...and it is usually very vivid, as if it really happens and I have died in my dream. Not pleasant.

I will still look out. That said I LOVE planes. I even go to Airshows...pooping myself but I go!

Yeah, so thanks, it sounds just what I wanted to hear!

🍻 Cheers

Probably because the runway being used when you heard it has an approach pattern which is close to being directly overhead. You just happened to be in the right place at the right time to hear it.

Whenever I have a reocurring dream I like to explore the deeper meaning it may be trying to convey. For example I have a terrible fear of bears and dream annalysis tells be it symbolizes loss of security-and is't been proven accurate all four times I've been plagued by this dream.
You might consider what is going on in your life when you have your dream and see if there is a connection. Here's some of the reasons suggested:

Based on the provided search results, a dream about a plane falling from the sky and killing you can have multiple interpretations. Here are some possible meanings:

Loss of control: The plane falling from the sky may symbolize a fear of losing control or feeling powerless in your waking life. The fact that you survive the flying debris could indicate a desire to regain control or find ways to cope with feelings of vulnerability.
Fear of failure or death: The dream may be a manifestation of your subconscious anxiety about failure or mortality. The plane crash could represent a catastrophic event or a sense of impending doom, and your survival might signify a desire to overcome these fears or find ways to mitigate their impact.
Transition or change: Planes in dreams often symbolize transitions or journeys. The falling plane could represent a fear or unease about an impending change or transition in your life, and your survival might indicate a need to adapt or find ways to navigate this change.
Fear of the unknown: The dream could be a reflection of your subconscious mind’s attempt to process and make sense of uncertain or unpredictable situations in your waking life. The plane crash might symbolize a fear of the unknown or uncontrollable events, and your survival could represent a desire to find ways to cope with or prepare for these uncertainties.
Personal growth and resilience: The fact that you survive the crash and flying debris might indicate a sense of personal growth and resilience. This could suggest that your subconscious is acknowledging your ability to overcome challenges and adapt to difficult situations.
To better understand the significance of this dream, consider the following questions:

What was your emotional state during the dream? Were you feeling anxious, scared, or calm?
Have you experienced any significant changes or transitions in your life recently?
Are there any areas where you feel a lack of control or uncertainty?
How do you typically cope with stress or anxiety in your waking life?
Reflecting on these questions and exploring your personal associations with the dream elements may help you uncover a more nuanced understanding of its symbolism and significance.

It doesn't explain what you heard, but it could give some insight into your reocurring nightmare.

This interpretation may be correct. It isn't always a plane, but 98% of the time. What's important is that it is a large thing hanging in the sky, getting out of control and then always blooming' falling in my direction.
In my dream it's terrifying. Wherever I run, that's where it will fall.
Haven't had one in a few months. It happens about once or twice a year.
It's so ingrained, that now when I see a plane or a rocket or anyrhing huge in my dream, I kind of know it's a dream, but because it's so real, I don't believe myself.

This dream often goes hand in hand with seeing lights in the sky, making patterns, there are hundreds of them in all shapes, so far they are in the stratosphere.

I know they are extra terrestrial. No fear there, only a little weariness.

Yup, when these ones turn up I tell people in my dreams that I'm probably dreaming, but as I said I don't listen to myself and do all the tricks to confirm it.

My part was just about aircraft, and how they fly, takeoff and land.

I know nothing about metaphysical dream related stuff, so I will defer to others on this subject.

(I can talk about aircraft though, and all their performance envelopes. Beyond that, I'm kinda' out of my league.)

I've got you covered there, FCD. Dream analysis isn't just for metaphysical practioners, though; psychiatrists and psychologist often examine a patients dreams to get a quick understanding of their mental state and what's troubling them.

Carl Jung was probably the fater of dream analysis while his counterpart got stuck on peter envy.

I read your description and I tend to agree with the person saying that is the changing of the rpm of a jet engine. I live near the airport at Austin, Texas. When the wind is right, the jets drop down from their cruise altitudes and somewhat glide with reduced power. As they reach their approach altitude, they must power UP the engines somewhat to maintain that altitude. That sometimes make an interesting noise for about two seconds.
