An astronaut has been rushed to hospital after returning to Earth with an unexplained medical condition. The whole crew was taken to hospital out of precaution, but did not say if all or some of the astronauts had been suffering from the medical condition.

Other three crew members have since been discharged from hospital, NASA said.

The space agency said: "The one astronaut who remains at Ascension is in stable condition under observation as a precautionary measure."

SpaceX launched the four personnel - Nasa's Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps, and Russia's Alexander Grebenkin - in March.

Not really much more information available yet regarding the specific medical condition.

Will add further information if/when it materialises

Suffice to say they are in a stable condition and hopefully it's nothing too serious and they make a full recovery.

I'm put in mind of "The Andromeda Strain" myself.

Accept they did not crash into anything.

Or whats the one where the astronauts come back as space vampires "Lifeforce".

Halloween just around the corner as well

Was it one of the astronauts that was only supposed to be up there for 8 days but got stuck for 5 months?

I wonder if that had anything to do with this?

Isn't this how the Fantastic Four started?

Prayers for the astronaut still in care.

Could be right.

I think there were two in that predicament.

If i was to hazard a bet myself watchitburn i would go with it being one of them.

Guess we just need to wait until the person is named.

It does not look to be the Russian Cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin who is apparently posting on Telegram that he feels great.

Please alert us further if any reports emerge from the hospital of claws, octopus-type arms, gobs of dripping saliva, more than four appendages (not including heads) and ANY strange behavior. Call Dr. House if necessary. He can fix anything.

This is a huge problem with space travel. Imagine several years weightless and then landing on a planet with gravity..
We just don’t know the long term effects of zero gravity and solar radiation on the human body.

That's true.

And while we have learned a lot about the effects of space on the human body since the likes of Apolo and through the subsequent missions on the International Space Station and its predecessors, there's still a lot to uncover.

Especially when considering long-term effects.

Its clear that zero gravity affects muscle and bone density, leading to muscle atrophy and bone loss.

And that exposure to solar radiation increases the risk of cancer and damages DNA.

The fact of the matter is we evolved down here under gravity and atmospheric pressure and protected by the stratosphere.

We are rather ill-equipped to deal with the sort of environment that space flings at us.

But if they dont go, they won't ever learn.

Soon after splashdown, Nasa said one of its astronauts had a “medical issue” and was flown to a hospital in Pensacola, Florida, as a precaution.

I wonder if it was some kind of heart attack or associated issue?

Anyone have photos of all of the astronauts? Age, and lack of being physically fit i.e. working out daily could maybe have had a role?

Back in the day NASA and the military had a physical requirement for astronauts not just having brains.

From what i can establish both NASA and the military still have strict physical requirements for astronauts and both groups still undergo extensive training.

They need to be pretty healthy and physically fit just to survive the launch. I do have to question their mental screening though.. remember the lady that went nuts?

Lisa Nowak?

Luckily that was down here and not up there.

I mean i dont think the ISS currently has a rubber room.

I'm sure they have procedures for someone losing it all the same.

Which probably involves restraining them for the foreseeable and shooting them full of a load of space Valium.

Thats hilarious 2 movies/stories that stuck with me from my youth.

Andromeda Strain, pretty sure I saw its original release in 71 when I was 5-6 years old, it was surreal, and watching the monkey die stuck with me forever

Life Force was a little later and it stuck with me as a teen because a hot chick was walking around butt-ass naked the whole movie otherwise dont remember the movie at all

Those two aren't coming back until February, this was the contingent already on station when those two arrived.
