US B-2 bombers strike Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen

In other timelines, worlds, and bygone eras, this would be considered a major escalation

Did they fly out of Missouri?

so many questions

Statement by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on U.S. Airstrikes in Houthi-Controlled Areas of Yemen

Today, U.S. military forces, including U.S. Air Force B-2 bombers, conducted precision strikes against five hardened underground weapons storage locations in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. U.S. forces targeted several of the Houthis’ underground facilities housing various weapons components of types that the Houthis have used to target civilian and military vessels throughout the region. This was a unique demonstration of the United States’ ability to target facilities that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach, no matter how deeply buried underground, hardened, or fortified. The employment of U.S. Air Force B-2 Spirit long-range stealth bombers demonstrate U.S. global strike capabilities to take action against these targets when necessary, anytime, anywhere.

For over a year, the Iran-backed Houthis, Specially Designated Global Terrorists, have recklessly and unlawfully attacked U.S. and international vessels transiting the Red Sea, the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis’ illegal attacks continue to disrupt the free flow of international commerce, threaten environmental catastrophe, and put innocent civilian lives and U.S. and partner forces’ lives at risk. At the direction of President Biden, I authorized these targeted strikes to further degrade the Houthis’ capability to continue their destabilizing behavior and to protect and defend U.S. forces and personnel in one of the world’s most critical waterways.

Again, the United States will not hesitate to take action to defend American lives and assets; to deter attacks against civilians and our regional partners; and to protect freedom of navigation and increase the safety and security in these waterways for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels. We will continue to make clear to the Houthis that there will be consequences for their illegal and reckless attacks. I am grateful for the professionalism and skill of the brave American troops who took part in today’s actions and who continue to stand guard in defense of our Nation.

Before tonight’s B-2 strikes against the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen, the last time the American stealth bombers were used in combat was against ISIS in Libya on Obama’s last day in office.

The more we see Iran's "offense" the less they are feared. There is NOTHING Iran can do to stop us from destroying all of their "proxies", and even the grand mullah Kohmenis themselves, should we choose to do so.

Almost certainly flew out of Whiteman AFB. They like to fly out of and return to, a secure location.

You would think this would come up on Fox News. They just keep going on about the Kamala train wreck.

Not really watchIng but I think I would have noticed it in the background.

Edit: Could this be ment as a distraction from that train wreck?

It was a Whiteman-Whiteman mission, flying as SARGE11 and SARGE21.

Possibly as many as four aircraft, involving aircraft from the 13th Bomb Squadron, 509th Bomb Wing, and the Missouri Air National Guard 131st Bomb Wing, most likely using BLU-109 2,000 pound bombs. I expect more details over the next day or so.

The Houthis’ illegal attacks on international vessels transiting the Red Sea and surrounding area has been causing major disruption to trade routes, it's good to see some serious aircraft used to defend one of the most used water ways by commercial shipping.
I don't want to see escalation or all out war, but we also can't allow Iranian proxies to continually attack civilian shipping without serious consequences.

Does anyone think our current Commander in Chief ordered these bombings? If not, who did?

it's good that they finally decided to do a little something about this, but being feckless for this long sure isn't a good look. Why weren't they ventilated after the first rocket was fired at a US ship? Weak pathetic leadership is my guess.

Wouldnt have thought they would need B2's for the Houthis, I would have expected BUFF's

The news has been quiet on this, because democrats do not want the butt kissing terrorist living in the US and voters to go and start protest all over before elections, let forbid if they decide to have a few terrorist attack with all the illegal terrorist in the country now.

I say carpet bomb Iran.

I am not so sure thats the best answer in this case, though I completely do understand it

Take out the leadership and military with continued surgical strikes and special OPS and find and support internal opposition while protecting thier backside.

Indiscriminate carpet bombing just leads to Military occupation and we haven't made that work since the 40s

The irony is that while the US use military strikes, it also keeps funding terrorist sponsoring countries like Iran soo they can keep attacking US in the area.

Our taxpayer's money kills our own troops when Iran targets them.

That's what keeps the MIC fat and happy, much like our health care it isn't about solutions to end the problem, it's about treating the symptoms and having forever patients for Big Pharma or forever wars for Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, etc.

B-52s would have required stand off weapons or pretty serious Growler and F-35 escorts. Stand off weapons don't hit underground targets nearly as well as a BLU-109. And B-52s wouldn't send the same message.

It could be provocation to illicit just that sort of response.
