I've met to many politicians. Most everyone comes at it with a good heart, but bad Ideas. Ether side.

If anyone is following this still. He is back in the states after a bad situation in Costa Rica. Was radio silent for about a week. Due to his wife taking all of his communication devices.
He's back. He is well. He is still dumb.

You said you friend has a wife? Is she of sound mind?
Is their marriage a good one, or is the wife under his thumbs?
Is she allowed to have an opinion and more so, has she reached out for help with her husband's decision?

Why did your friend chose Costa Rica?
Has he ever been there, does he know someone there, or did he just see some pictures on the internet?

How old is this ex lawyer friend? Midlife crisis means he's middle aged.
Is he bipolar or has some kind of mental deficiency or lack of life experience?
If so, you must stop him dragging his family into ruin.

If however he is overworked, or had this plan forever in his head, if he has particular reasons for going there etc, all you can do is tell him that YOU think it's a bad idea, tell him why...and that's it. You can't and shouldn't stand in his and his family's way.

We just don't have enough info to give advice on this. Maybe you don't either.

I am a persin who can do extreme decisions like that, my husband whom I met thanks to one of those is like me.
I could see ourselves doing something like your friend easily.

It might freak others out, but sime people need extreme change, and usually, for those people it is the right thing to do.
Everyone is different.

Let them make the mistakes they need to make

What matters is being there if it comes crumbling down - also hope you are wrong and wish them the best if they will instist and where necessary support them if a friend..

You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink. But you get to learn if wrong at worst.

PS: Only read your op with that response.. I still stand by what ive said and hope it all gets sorted

He's my buddy forever. But holy F. He makes some bad choices some times.
