Yeah, I know, I know, people's sense of humor depends upon their particuclar funnybone.
However, I will liken the original Beetlejuice and the sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice by comparing smoking a nice bowl of prime Acapulco Gold to smoking a bowl of oregano and punching yourself in the face till you pass out.

Well, chances are I saw the first one first which would make me more stupid than most people already think I am if I had seen the second second having hated the first one.

Back in the early eighties, I worked with a lady in her 40's named Bunny. One day I had to perform maintenance on her machinery, I asked her if Bunny was her real name or a nickname. She replied that it was her nickname, her real first name was Alcyone. I replied, Well, your parents named you after a beautiful star! I then stated, It's a good thing they didn't have a crooked sense of humor and named you Betelgeuse.

Boy, she got mad at me! Betelgeuse???, she shouted above the sound of the machinery, Betelgeuse!!!??? I said, Bunny, Betelgeuse is a star, a giant red star! You'll have to prove it to me!, she angrily said to me!

I hurried out to the line manager's desk and grabbed his Webster's Dictionary and found Betelgeuse, and showed the entry to her. See, I said, It's not spelled beetle juice, but Betelgeuse and see it's a star, too. That started a friendship and every time we met in the plant we would look at each other and say, Betelgeuse!! and laugh!

She went on a lengthy vacation and when she returned, she saw me on the line and told me to come see her at her machine. I asked, how was your vacation and where did you go? She said LA and saw some of my friends in the movie industry. I told them about Betelgeuse and some of them nearly fell on the floor laughing! All in all I had a great time!

I'd like to think that "Beetlejuice" was created by Bunny and me...

I liked the first one a bunch.

It was clear in the first one that Beetlejuice was a ghost, meaning he was a dead human.

He said "I"m the ghost with the most" and he said "you are talking to a dead guy".

But I won't see the second one.
They have made it clear now that he is a demon.
And i don't screw with that stuff.
Not even in comedy.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion" (Betelgeuse = the 'shoulder of Orion')

"I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate"

"All those moments will be lost, in time...like tears in the rain"

"...Time to die."

edit - Even 'Tannhauser Gate' was symbolic in the famous monologue, apparently drawing parallels to Wagner's Tannhauser whom had fallen from grace with man and God, both whose fate is beyond their reach.

How beetlejuice should be to make it worthy of watching.

I remember the really awful cartoon Saturday mornings in the late 80s. It made the Adams Family cartoon look good. Which also sucked.
Now the Frankenstones and The Flintstones was good. As I recall he( The father) had a voice like Charles Nelson Riley and Fred would call him " Weirdo" and he'd call Fred " Stange o." Not to be confused with Weirdlya dn Creepella who were the Flintstone's answer to The Adams Family.
I like Michael Keaton and Catharine Ohara and Geena Davis so the original movie is partly okay. But the father was a child molester and of course Alec Baldwin became an uber a hole and also a murderer. So i can't ever watch it again. And its depiction of the afterlife was awfully bleak and depressing.
And the scenes where they sing along to Mambo time and Tally man are vastly overrated.

Yeah, but it made for a happy ending to that one. In contrast, this sequel also had a big musical scene, at the marriage . They chose to do it to one of the most pretentious songs ever recorded, ''MacArthur Park'' sung by of all people, actor Richard Harris who for what reason even time itself will never uncover.

I've seen the first one but wasn't too impressed. So I'm avoiding the 2nd one cause it wouldn't even be so far-fetched to me if they made Beetlejuice a woman. At the very least, the emphasis will probably be more on the female lead 'coming into her power overcoming the patriarchy that holds her back' (i.e. "the message") than Beetlejuice himself. Would also not surprise me if she's a lesbian now as well.
