I upgraded my computer's system disk in August, but I don't remember what software I used. It was easy, but it was the same system data on a new disk on the same hardware, copying system data from a different computer is more likely to give you problems.

Windows 10 (and I think previous versions too) has the possibility of creating an image that can be used to "restore" the system on another computer.

What OS does your computer have?

Sorry, I haven't used any in over a decade. The last was Acronis for cloning the entire HD.

I guess it is more laborious to clone just the installed 3rd party programs, I think there would be some complications along the way with registry entries.

I believe Micro$oft has a migration tool, but I remember reading it uses an M$ account and cloud to do the dirty work; I haven't checked if it can be done via an external HD or a special USB cable Pc-2-PC.

these days, PC's get so bogged down with "spyware and junk" that a fresh reload every now and then can really help. Cloning a drive will only perpetuate the junk. It's sad, because cloning a drive was the easy route. You could get everything the customer wanted. Now you have to reload, then re install the programs you want, and Microsoft makes it a challenge to keep all your office products unless they are 365 based.

I expect everything to be cloud based soon and the PC will just be a portal to the internet, and you get get the same stuff (your stuff) from any PC. that way, hacking someone's stuff will be streamlined, and easy.

I never had that problem, but I have seen the other side of the problem, new computers filled with junk the maker decided we would want.

But it's true that cloning will move any problems to the new computer.

Bloat-ware. One of the other reasons I don't like getting a new computer...spending hours cleaning out all the bloat-ware.

'Sign up for this!...You need that!...Special limited time offer!...40% discount if you sign up now...Free trial subscription...FREE (for 30 days)...(47) different 'assistants', etc.'

(Delete, uninstall, delete, delete, remove from startup, delete, delete, remove from startup and registry, delete, delete, DELETE!...and..."Don't you DARE even install Norton on my computer!!!"...DELETE!)

😁🤣

As usual when I don't remember what I used, I retraced my browser history and found (again) the tutorial I used to upgrade my system disk.

(This is a different version of the video I used, as one of the programs stopped being free. And yes, it's a video, sometimes I do watch videos)

I hope it helps.
