They still had a measurement of value pinned to certain commodities that were regulated in temples. If someone felt they were ripped off because they
got a bag of dates instead of Lemons, they'd go to a temple and settle the dispute based on how much a lemon was worth and a date was worth.
Bartering wasn't the economic system, it was just simply how people carried out individual transactions. They also had lots of slaves.
