They still had a measurement of value pinned to certain commodities that were regulated in temples. If someone felt they were ripped off because they got a bag of dates instead of Lemons, they'd go to a temple and settle the dispute based on how much a lemon was worth and a date was worth.

Bartering wasn't the economic system, it was just simply how people carried out individual transactions. They also had lots of slaves.

Funny you should mention slaves who were also used as a commodity of sorts.
