Wonder why they decided to stop there and not just make a law saying everyone has to be Russian Orthodox. Set the number of required trips to church a year and make sure people are tithing.
I feel like what is considered occult, demonic, ect is in the eye of the beholder who pushed for the law. Maybe rock music will be considered demonic.

Who are they? Your opening post does not include any common Russian people's desires about banning the occult only the church's and certain elites/authority figures?
What about psi research in the government, will that be thrown to the wayside too?

Did Putin personally tell you about this? Or did you learn this from the tabloids?
The plan is to be overseen by General Alexander Komov, a deputy director in the Federal Protective Service, with an unnamed source in the Kremlin's security service saying that Komov harbors a deep interest in astrology and pseudo-science, according to The Insider.
Insider was unable to independently verify the authenticity of these claims.
The Russian government's press service and Federal Protective Service did not respond to Insider's requests for a comment.

If you want to know a person's opinion, ask him first. Don't use fake publications.
So, how did Saudi authorities prove Nasser was a witch? The government hasn’t gone into detail, but a look at the kingdom’s past witchcraft cases suggests the bar for proving someone guilty isn’t very high. Witch hunting is fairly institutionalized in Saudi Arabia, with the country’s religious police running an Anti-Witchcraft Unit and a sorcery hotline to combat practices like astrology and fortune telling that are considered un-Islamic.
