When I was 17 I was introduced to the madness that oil wealth brings. Destruction of natural habitat coupled with careless abuse of indigenous populations. I also learned that the oil industry can't say anything straight.

North Sea oil and gas firm Perenco failing to seal old wells, documents show
www.theguardian.com...

What could be more important than sealing up the old wells that have brought you so much wealth?

The Perrodo family, which via Perenco owns more than 3,000 oil wells across the world, has built up an estimated fortune of more than £7bn, which they spend on a jet-set luxury lifestyle detailed in Instagram posts.

www.theguardian.com...

Perenco has been embroiled in various environmental and human rights scandals in several countries where it is present. Accused of funding paramilitary groups in Colombia and linked to the displacement of indigenous communities in Guatemala, the firm has also faced a litany of land pollution and water contamination allegation across Africa and Latin America.

It seems the North Sea oil wells are going to leak forever and the money that could have prevented that has been squandered on fast cars etc.

Yest another example of humanity treating The Earth as a waste bin.
We'd die off pretty quick if it weren't for the oceans, the Amazon, rivers, land etc.

We are polluting everywhere.

We are a destructive species.

Don't worry. The wells will run dry eventually. Then the leaking will stop.

I somewhat agree, I think most of the destruction is from urban expansion, places I’ve seen in remote areas are now unrecognizable to me. Instead of tearing down old structures and rebuilding, they just find another location and start wacking away.

Your statement is only factual IF....i repeat 'if'... oil is finite....

i believe oil is 'Abiotic' and most oil fields will replenish in due time...so drilling wells is a 'perpetual' cost/activity/ responsibility attached to the production of the oil/petroleum and ecosystems

There are natural fissures in the ocean floors where oil leaks out, so Nature must have some mechanism to deal with it. I do agree though, that it's not too much to ask of these big companies to clean up after themselves. Why add to the problem.

yeah, there are strata leaks in the Earth crust that 'Nature' deals with....
thus the resulting deposits of 'coal' and 'shale oil' fields that required time/oil presence to solidify and become a 'resource'

in this present era..... the mega oil corps are just 'exploiting' and far from being 'stewards' of the Earth Systems

I wasn't referring to it in a resource way, but a "stop polluting", "save the planet" way. Fissures, have been leaking oil for millions of years, and yet life flourishes.

Isn't that a standard in marriage, especially as we get older. My Mrs also has the faster car.

As for the OP
Isn't this just a standard for big companies, reap the rewards and screw the consequences.

Unfortunately not. Rock oil condenses from gases emitted from the depths of the Earth. The 'fossil fuel' myth was invented to create a feeling of urgency, 'It's going to run out so grab it while you can'.

The truth is that oil is a natural and organic substance, but not in the way that Rockefeller and his scientists meant. Oil is not derived from dead organisms, but from the earth itself. Oil is a product of the earth’s geology, chemistry, and physics. Oil is formed by the interaction of the earth’s mantle, crust, and core, which are constantly in motion and generate heat and pressure. Oil is also influenced by the earth’s magnetic field, gravity, and rotation, which affect the distribution and movement of oil. Oil is also affected by the sun, the moon, and the planets, which create cycles and patterns of oil production and consumption. Oil is also affected by the earth’s biosphere, which includes the living organisms that inhabit the earth and the atmosphere that surrounds it. Oil is a part of the earth’s natural system, and it is constantly being created and recycled by the earth.

Oil is not scarce
The second thing you need to know is that oil is not scarce. This is another false and misleading idea that was propagated by Rockefeller and his successors to maintain their monopoly and control over the oil market. They wanted to create the impression that oil was a limited and dwindling resource that had to be carefully managed and rationed. They also wanted to create a sense of urgency and fear among the public, and to persuade them to pay higher prices for their oil and to accept their policies and regulations.
nevillewright.com...

Many oil and gas reservoirs are re-pressurising. It's all guesswork but they won't tell you that because 'face'.

Confession. I stopped most of my driving when I arrived in Gloucestershire, having driven from Durham, overtaking on the inside at 100mph several times on the way down. On arrival I realised I was mentally unfit to drive. Now I just hire vehicles from people I respect and I'm very careful with their property.

What I'm referring to in the OP is the Perrodo interest in racing.

Perrodo is the president of the Franco-British Perenco, an oil and gas corporation specialized in secondary recovery from wells the major oil companies have ceased to exploit.[1] He has acquired significant real estate using shell companies in offshore tax havens.[7]

Car collection
Perrodo maintains a large collection of historically significant automobiles and is one of the most prolific French car collectors. He keeps cars in both France and the United Kingdom. Perrodo shares photos and stories of his cars and his racing career on his Instagram account.[8]

The collection includes:[9]

Fun, fun, fun. Meanwhile, in the words of a big player I know . . . "We're leaving a huge mess for our children to clean up."

Failing to clean up the oil infrastructure is extreme bad parenting.

I worked off -shore briefly many moons ago and saw first hand all the infrastructure that is on the sea bed and was gobsmacked at the amount of it .

We see a oil rig on the surface and just like a iceberg everything is underwater and not visable to the eye , if ever there was a natural disaster or Putin nuked the sea floor as he has threatened lately the deep water fiasco in America would be like farting in the bath in comparison.

I once worked on what the government claimed were Sadam Hussains super guns but were really Piles hundreds of feet long that were driven into the sea bed for a oil rig jacket to sit on
.

if people really knew how much oil is discarded from oil tankers etc at sea they would be up in arms
