Not sure if this section only covers US elections but here in the UK there's been a great proposal by Ex-Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price to make it a criminal offence for politicians to lie.

“The public are rightly tired of seeing certain politicians lie with impunity,” he said. “It is not enough for us as lawmakers to throw up our hands in disgust. We have the power to change the rules so all politicians act with integrity, honesty and respect.”

Price has been campaigning on truth and trust in politics since the mid 2000s when he tried to impeach Tony Blair over the Iraq war.

He said: “Then it was almost laughed out of court with comments such as: ‘There aren’t prisons big enough’.

The Tories are publicly claiming to back the move despite being historically known as the Party of sleaze and the last few yearsbeing non-stop lies and blatant corruption.

The move is backed by www.compassioninpolitics.com... who point out that it is illegal to lie and mislead in many other areas of public and professional life and politicians should not be exempt from this.

The bill is still up for further debarte but so far a member of the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) or election candidate to lie, mislead or make deceptive statements.

---
Ban on politicians lying could become law in Wales

Personally I think it's an amazing idea and desperately needed to stop the constant stream of BS and lies in politics, restore public trust and effective democracy but what say ATS?

make it punishable by death and you might have something there. I'd love for this to be a real thing, and then move on to the media. If they were forced to become "journalists" again, we might all get just a little smarter rather than barreling towards idiocracy at full speed.

Means that all these politicians will have to look for a new job because politicians and not lying simply doesn´t go together as we all know.

It would also be nice if these liars were liable with their private assets for the obvious burning of taxpayers' money because from exactly that moment they were liable, there would be no senseless burning of tax payers money anymore.

Will never happen because the liar-puppets do exactly what their ultra-rich puppet masters want them to do, distributing money from the bottom up.

The tories are only supporting this because Wales is always mostly Labour with a few Plaid Cymru seats.

If this gets passed which I doubt, all that will happen is politicians will do more of what they already do-NEVER answer questions, just waffle on about nonsense which means nothing.

Haha. Thanks for the chuckle.

They’d be out of a job.

And what about those that are “unelected officials” holding public or worse, international positions?

Hmmmm?

Edit: governments aren’t known for their transparency…

Edit X2: next we’ll be asking for them to show their bank accounts.

Lulz.

Well, if they weren't crooked and caught red handed already, then we won't be needing to know the bank accounts.

Aside from the fact Labour will win Wales so it won't happen it is a good idea although government drafted legislation covering themselves would likely contain many loopholes or escape clauses.

Pretty sure the word "politician" is from ancient Greek and means those who lie often , although I may be wrong.

It just shows how far gone we are when it comes to this. People won’t believe it!

Sounds great. But it begs the question, who or what will decide is the truth or not?

There's a bit if a double standard here, people complain about fact checkers already, now all of a sudden since it's arbitrarily applied to political figures a ministry of truth being formed is OK?

Worse...make it punishable by removal from office and prohibition from seeking future elected / appointed government positions. That'll REALLY get their attention!

Putting a person with no soul to death doesn't really accomplish anything; it's like a net-zero game. Making them actually 'work' for a living for the balance of their lives is the most fearful thing any of these political douche-muffins could ever contemplate!

Simple question.

Who's truth?

Because at this moment, AMERICA cannot agree on what the "truth" is. So basically, there is really no truth, just what people are willing to believe. Facts don't change. But people seem to be able to see the very same facts in very opposing ways. And when this happens, the truth means nothing.

That IS the TRUTH.

There isn't enough electricity in the known universe to electro-shock me into trusting a f'n politician..

They'll just lie about lying...
