Microplastic discovery in penises raises erectile dysfunction questions

This seems to be jumping on the publication a couple of weeks ago of a Japanese (I think) study that found microplastics in semen samples, but only involves five subjects.

The study assessed tissue taken from five men who were undergoing surgery related to erectile dysfunction. Microplastics were found in four cases, with PET and polypropylene being the most prevalent. Both are used in food and drink packaging and other everyday items.

Dr Ranjith Ramasamy, who led the new research while at the University of Miami in the US, said: “The penis is a vascular, spongy organ so is definitely vulnerable. During an erection, a fifth of the blood volume in the whole body gets pumped to the penis.”

He added: “We know erectile dysfunction is multifactorial. You need good hormones, nerves, blood supply, and good smooth muscle tissue for an erection to happen.

“We found that microplastics were present in the smooth muscle of the penis. All we know is that they are not supposed to be there, and we suspect that it could lead to smooth muscle dysfunction.”

Five may appear to be too small a sample to be representative of the global population but given that microplastics have been found "wherever they have looked", to assume that 80% of men are similarly, if not as extensively, contaminated seems reasonable

Ramasamy said: “As a society, we need to be cognisant that drinking water from plastic water bottles, getting takeout food in plastic containers and, even worse, microwaving food in plastic containers, are contributing to having things in our body that should not be there. And the penis is the one organ that everybody will pay attention to.”

Well, perhaps not everyone, but he makes a good point

Plastic is a part of our environment these days, long polymer chains that are hard to break down. For one body part where some flexibility is a good thing, sounds like the body is trying to make the most of it.

It is indeed, for better or worse, that and the Teflon have been found in every living organism that they've examined - they being scientists, lol - but I don't think you read the article or perhaps don't understand the workings of your own penis very well.

If the plastics are in your blood, each time blood is directed to your penis (or clitoris for that matter), it carries those plastics with it, but, quite possibly, doesn't carry all of them out when the blood flows out, leaving the plastics to accumulate leading to "impaired relaxation of cavernous smooth muscles".

Had one all my life. It was eww until reaching puberty. I have been exposed to a lot of toxic stuff over the years, as we all have since the industrial revolution started to pick up. Our bodies are made from ashes and dust that it will return too that one day. The periodic table of elements is nothing new for DNA. It does not do well with the heavier metals, as for a lot of the more common hydrocarbons and lighter elements, we would not be here without it.

I am very sorry to hear that.

It's one of those things I suppose, until it's a problem, it's not your problem. Right? Some people will get erectile dysfunction, some will get cancer etc etc but that's just how it is because of what? Industrial processes necessitate it? And we're all in the process of dying anyway? Lol.

Yeah, think about it, given that Israel had effectively cut Palestine off from fresh drinking water and made them dependent upon bottled water. Another couple of generations and not a Palestinian would have been capable of rising to the occasion.

And Global Warming appears to be addressing the Muslim issue in general, they're dropping like flies for Hajj this year.

If it is some Master Plan it's a very poorly thought out one with little intelligence applied to the fore-thought. Personally, I just see bucket-loads of greed. Nobody, not even the richest and most powerful is immune. And, we're, our actions, are taking all the higher mammals with us, not to mention many, many other species who are similarly dependent on certain environmental parameters. Some of the most robust species, bacterial and viral for example, are adapting significantly better than we are, giving us firm evidence of where we stand in the food chain, as well as what a real apex predator looks like.

You are sorry that I was not sexualised as a kid? I don't get that vibe from your other posts, more the opposite. It is a part of life, we would not be here without out it. But when we are ready. Do you know how bad a fruit tastes when not ready?

Not at all. I was sorry you felt that your penis was "eww". I thought perhaps you felt your bodily functions, such as urinating were "eww".

I didn't realise the "eww" meant you thought sex was "eww" until puberty, but then I don't understand how you would know to think it was "eww" if you hadn't already been exposed to sex? Or as you put it, sexualised, already.

Just walk into any primary school and bring up this topic of sex. In the later grades some are starting to get it. In the earlier grades too much information.

Some of that has changed with the policy getting pushed these days. Part of the Marxist agenda destroying the family unit and turning the next generation into a bunch of sluts that are quick to give their kids to the state. It is not the only angle the family is under attack these days, but is one approach.

Then how some kids these days have access to porn. IDK?

Plastics at unsafe levels have been found not only in the oceans and all the fish that live there, but also in municiple water supplies, lakes, stremas and rivers.

It's in the soil and every crop grown. Beef, chicken, hogs and other meat sources also have high lebvels of micro plastics.

It's been found in all breast milk tested, and even in pasturized milk. They're found in our internal organs, our bones and joints.

While all the talking heads want us to focus on and fear something we have little control over or ability to effect in any meaningful way (climate change) the real threat to the entire human species gets little to no attention.

The dangers of microplastics have been known for many years, but there's too much money to be lost by addressing it.

Modern chemicals are the gift that keeps on giving.

What a great topic -- the dildoization of penises. I don't think I've ever before been able to say those words.

The process of adding plastics into our penises, until they pretty much become dildos themselves.

On a more serious note, this is not happening just to penises. The microplastics are so small, they are in fact micro, and they get into each and every one of our cells and are also able to pass the blood-brain barrier. Inside the cells, they interrupt the normal processes and can start up mutations and tumorous growths.

I think I'd really rather not.

I personally feel you can't have too much information and children absolutely love information, if you don't provide it they will seek it out themselves and by information I don't mean personal and private information. Facts and the science of it all. Children are far less preoccupied with gossip than their parents may be. I had explained the mechanics to my child long before the school got around to doing it, because they asked - and was given notice by the school, as were all parents, that such "talks" were going to take place and the opportunity to voice any objections. I consider it to be information that is essential to navigating life, that benefits from being delivered in a mixed group setting, to establishing, understanding and maintaining personal boundaries. The information doesn't sexualise them, it's the lack of information that allows them to be, or vulnerable to, sexualisation.

I think the difficulty here isn't one threat being greater than the other but that we are facing a combination of threats. However, while the consequences of Global Warming and Climate Change are still fairly localised, and their effects outside of those regions hard to appreciate by those not, the consequences of our use of plastics, and other chemicals, is much more wide spread and increasingly tangible on the individual level, all roads lead to our over-dependency on fossil fuels be it, coal extraction, processing and burning causing massive land degradation as well as environmental pollution, or oil and the petro-chemical industry - we know it is poisoning us and our environment - and so do they which is why they exerted so much time, money and effort in concealing that simple truth.
